Fancy Ices Ice Cream Review

Fancy Ices Dessert Cafe is a little hidden gem tucked away in Field Street (off Gouger Street in Adelaide). It’s the first liquid nitrogen ice cream parlour in Adelaide and opened in January 2015. You’ve seen Heston Blumenthal and Masterchef use it in fancy recipes – now you can have your own ice cream made while you watch here.

At Fancy Ices they use fresh ingredients and use liquid nitrogen to turn the liquid into ice cream.

When liquid nitrogen is added to a liquid such as an ice cream mixture, it freezes the liquid rapidly while it boils away. This process produces a cloud of vapour.

They also churn the ice cream simultaneously to aerate the mixture to avoid ice crystals forming and ensure it is smooth and creamy.

Kids find it fascinating to watch the process of them making the ice cream. It’s serious science lab stuff, with staff wearing protective gear when handling the liquid nitrogen.

The cafe is not very big but there is a little mezzanine and also a few tables to sit outside. There are also some cakes, coffee and drinks on offer, including shakes.

The kids love the cookies and cream panda ice cream pictured at the top while the coconut one below is more my thing. They often have different flavour combinations that they bring out as a special for a month.

It’s ice cream done a little bit differently and is fun to check out… and delicious to eat!
