Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden

Adelaide Botanic Garden finally has a kitchen garden!

Adelaide Botanic Garden staff have been frantically preparing for the commencement of the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden program and are very excited to start hosting children in the garden and leading them through a series of adventures and challenges.  Tailored for children aged three to six years, the Kitchen Garden will include an early years visiting program to connect children with food, nature and the environment.

The seedlings which were propagated at Mt Lofty have begun to be planted in the main garden beds, adding a living element to the garden as well as an abundance of colour and variety. Beetroot, celery, bok choy, lettuce, coriander, garlic, broccoli and cauliflower are just some of the vegetables and herbs that have been planted recently.

The Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden will develop a social, cultural and environmental understanding of where food comes from, with a horticultural, cultural and global perspective. The program will promote the development of kitchen gardens in homes, schools and communities in Adelaide.  The garden is being funded by the Department for Education and Child Development – so it will be aimed at young children, but will be open to the public and community groups too.

Wattle Park Kindergarten will be the first official group of children to be part of the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden Visiting Program on Wednesday 29 April 2015. Around 60 pre-school children, along with their teachers and parents will be the first group to enter the garden and enjoy a range of experiences in this wonderful environment.

Some of the activities will involve the children planting, digging, harvesting, weeding and watering as well as identifying plants, insects and other interesting elements of the garden. They will also have opportunities to learn about earth worms and their role in the garden and exploring the sensory aspects of a kitchen garden.

More information on this project, include locations of community gardens, gardening and cooking tips and upcoming workshops and events, can be found at the Kitchen Gardens SA website.
