Pumpt | Indoor BMX, Mountain Bike & Scooter Park | 221 Marion Road, Richmond | Review
It’s Australia’s largest indoor BMX, Scooter and MTB facility and it’s open right here in Adelaide. The 2,500 square metre warehouse at 221 Marion Road, Marleston, houses over 190 metres of pump tracks. The Play & Go boys gave it a good workout on opening day and even after 2 hours Mr 8 wanted to keep on rolling. Check out our pics and what we thought below.
All the tracks can be used by either BMX, mountain bikes or scooters. They provide BMX bikes and scooters as part of your entry fee. You can swap from one to another at the Pit Stop whenever you like. You are welcome to bring your own scooter, bike and skateboard, and the staff will check them over to make sure they are ok to use there. We suggest you take your own helmet (heads can get pretty sweaty) but they do also have ones to hire or buy.
Beginners can start off with this 10 metre roller below. Little ones can start with a balance bike – they can provide one or bring your own. Currently during the week from Tuesday to Friday there’s a special price of 3 hours for the price of 1 ($9 as of 18 March 2017) during 10am to 1pm. These sessions are in their special Balance Bike area. While they are burning off energy you can grab a coffee from the cafe and watch them go. This is a great time to visit as the big kids will be at school and the little tykes can have the place to themselves which might be less overwhelming for some.
Once you’ve got the hang of it you can move on to some of the more challenging runs. Each one is graded.
At each station there are staff who we found to be very helpful and can give you some tips. We were very impressed with the level of help and assistance offered by the staff.
There’s something for all abilities and ages. Little ones and beginners can have a go with easy rollers so they can get the idea of how to manoeuvre over the bumps using momentum and not pedalling. Experienced riders will love the more challenging “hard core” options like the one shown below. Skateboarders will also enjoy the Half Pipe.
The Battle Track is a lot of fun where you can race another rider if you like – either one of your friends, someone else there, or race against the clock. Your bike is placed on an inclined ramp; watch the traffic light and when it changes to green, the starting gate drops down and your bike will roll down the ramp to give you the momentum to go all the way around the track.
As you can see they have plenty of brand new bikes and scooters and a workshop to keep them in good condition.
Pumpt is set up for parties and have party rooms to cater for this.
You can keep your gear in lockers provided.
The Boneshaker cafe is light and airy and has a varied selection of food and drinks.
We recommend you book your session prior to visiting. For safety reasons there is a limit of riders per session. Don’t turn up without booking just in case there are parties and the session is full. You can book from 1 hour at a time (it gets cheaper per hour the longer you are there). Mr 8 spent 2 hours there and couldn’t get enough (his father however, needed a little bit of rest and was a tiny bit exhausted keeping up)!
Pumpt is sure to be a hit for all riding fans. It’s a great place for families with little ones starting out, to gain confidence, but provides plenty of challenges for more experienced hard core riders. Being indoors means you are not subject to weather conditions so you can ride anytime (although getting outdoors into the fresh air for a ride is also awesome, and free). Here there is also the convenience of not having to ride to a track or transport your bikes – they provide everything. What a great win for Adelaide to have this excellent facility to give even more choice for family entertainment which is great exercise too.
