Review of Ramage Street Park aka Morrie Harrell Playground

Review by Susannah Marks

Ramage Street Park (aka Morrie Harrell Playground) in Unley is a bit of a find – especially for those who love ride-on toys!

Tucked away on a quiet suburban street you’d have no idea this little gem of a playground was so close to Unley’s main drag. Located just between Ramage Street and Ash Avenue to the west of Unley Road, Ramage Street Park is the perfect playground to come to for a picnic lunch, or to let the kids run off steam.

With a mixture of old and new play equipment and a range of play areas and equipment, there is something to interest all ages. There is a slide, a seesaw, a large climbing structure, a spinning wheel which older kids will love, and swings.

But wait there’s more. The piece de resistance at Ramage Street Park is the range of ride-on toys which have been kindly left (presumably by locals) for the use of children who come to the park. Our little ones were delighted to find cars, push along bikes and even a supermarket trolley to play with.

So much to do for climbing enthusiasts!

The slide is great, though may be a bit fast for less confident small people.

There’s plenty of space to run and explore.

Even on a grey day the swings (and pink ride-on toys) were a lot of fun.

There is a path running through the park, which kids were having fun driving the ride-on cars along, but it’s probably not ideal for little cyclists.

A picnic table under a massive tree is a great spot to seek some shade.

What we love:

❤️ The ride-on toys which have been kindly left (presumably by locals) for the use of children who come to the park.

❤️ The climbing frame with a variety of attractions for kids of all ages

❤️ There is a spinning wheel structure that older kids will find fun

❤️ The community garden. Unley Council and the community have planted fruit and nut trees in Morrie Harrell Reserve, and you’re welcome to help yourself to a piece of fruit from the trees.

❤️ The sandpit which, on the day we went, was busy with toddlers enjoying the selection of toys left in the sandpit. It’s also shaded, which is great for sunny days. To be on the safe side you might like to BYO sandpit toys.

Things to consider:

❤️ There is a mixture of fencing on one side and fencing plus a low brick wall on the other side of the playground so you’ll want to keep an eye on toddlers who like to roam. Having said that it’s on a quiet street with little traffic.

❤️ There is no direct shade over the playground but there is a picnic table under a beautiful old tree. There is no BBQ, either.

❤️ There are no toilets at the park, but it’s a hop skip and a jump to Unley Shopping Centre.

Coffee and food nearby

❤️ It’s a three minute walk to Woolworths and Coles if you need to pick up provisions, or a quick sushi lunch.

Our favourite nearby coffee spots:

A Mother’s Milk, 105 Unley Road, and Pickle in the Middle, 134 Unley Road, which are both 450m (or around a 5 minute) walk away.
