The SA Police Historical Society will hold its annual Open Day at the Thebarton Police Barracks on Sunday, 7 May 2017.
During May’s History Month the South Australian Police Historical Society will celebrate 100 years with their biggest open day ever. The Barracks, which have played an integral role in SAPOL’s history, officially opened on 1 March 1917.
Costing £16,000 to build, Thebarton Barracks was initially constructed for the use of the mounted constables as the North Terrace Barracks were no longer suitable. The site chosen was controversial, with complaints it was too far from the city.
Guides will be on hand to show you around the collection of Police history in the musuem, including their world class collection of Police badges. There will be displays of historic Police vehicles and appearances from the Mounted Section, Dog Operations Unit and performances from sections of the Police Band.
BBQ and afternoon tea will be available and you can talk to researchers about Police history.
The SAPOL Thebarton Barracks Open Day will take place from 10am to 2pm. Entry is $5 for adults (free entry for children).
Access is through the Gaol Road gates. Limited parking available on Gaol Road with additional parking near the Thebarton tram stop (about 200m).
