Smashed | Fringe 2015 Review

Smashed is an artistic display of ensemble juggling mixed with modern dance and theatre. The mood is elegant with 1940s vintage music crooning. The whole show is pretty much all about apple juggling – 80 apples juggled amongst the team in a carefully choreographed show. There’s no dialogue – the 9 performers explore human emotions and relationships through acting with the continuous precision juggling of the apples. The deeper meanings of the work is a bit like seeing art at an art gallery – audiences of different ages will experience it in their own way. My 6 year old son enjoyed watching the juggling and the tea party at the end was chaotic and naughty enough to hold his attention. There’s a very good reason why it’s called ‘Smashed’ which is revealed in the last scenes.

It’s rated PG. There’s nothing scary about the show but there are some adult themes which include apples being put inside a bra and one male performer thrusting a bit behind a female performer. The predominantly adult audience seemed to be appreciative of the show. I would recommend for older kids. Don’t expect death-defying circus acts, jokes or audience interaction, this is not that kind of performance. It’s more like a moving piece of juggling art work.
