START at the Gallery

START at the Gallery offers an exciting introduction to visual art for children and families.  Held on the first Sunday of every month, START is free and includes art activities, tours, live performance and entertainment.  START is recommended for children aged 3-12 years and parent/carer supervision is required. No bookings are necessary.

Upcoming Programs

START at the Gallery Sunday 7 May 2017 – Food for Thought

Celebrate food in art on family tours of the collection, treat yourself to some tasty tales and make a delectable work of art fit for a banquet.

Children’s Tours

  • 11am, 11.30am, 12 noon, 12.30pm, 1pm, 1.30pm & 2pm
  • Focus on food in art on family tours of the collection
  • Location – Meet in the Santos Atrium

Fritz Sandwich

  • 11am – 12 noon
  • Meet Adelaide’s favourite clown Fritz Sandwich for some fun, magic and frivolity
  • Location – Roving performances

Circus Assortment

  • 12noon – 1pm
  • Circus artist Kate Lawrence will bend your mind and body with kicks and tricks and some inspiring circus skills
  • Location – Roving performances

Storytelling Performances, Dragon Stew

  • 11.15am, 12.15pm & 1.15pm
  • Dine out on Dragon Stew in storytelling performances of this adventurous tale by Steve Smallman
  • Location – Function Room

START Art Workshops

  • 11am – 3pm
  • Draw, cut, paste and collage to create delicious food for the enormous banquet table in START art workshops
  • Location – Radford Auditorium

START Sounds

  • 11am – 3pm
  • DJ Sandy Bunker mixes a feast of delicious beats in the Dumpster Sound System
  • Location – Sculpture Courtyard


START at the Gallery Sunday 4 June 2017 – Wonderland

START & ASO bring to life the enchanting story of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland through music and song. Join a Mad Hatter’s music workshop and see the gallery’s collection of tea sets on a tea party tour with gallery Guides.

START at the Gallery Sunday 2 July 2017 – Looking at Language

This START celebrates the beginning of NAIDOC Week and Indigenous language in art, music and storytelling.

START a the Gallery Sunday 6 August 2017 – Art Alive

See the art made at START by South Australia’s youngest Living Artists on show in the START Art Prize exhibition.

START at the Gallery Sunday 3 September – Colour Your World

Explore the artist’s palette on guided tours of the collection and experiment with colour in art activities this START.

START at the Gallery Sunday 1 October 2017 – Asian Awakening

Celebrate Oz Asia with START on a cultural journey through art, activities and festivities.

START at the Gallery Sunday 5 November 2017 – TARNANTHI Takeover

Experience the art of Australia’s rich and diverse Indigenous cultures in the art on display in TARNANTHI at START and discover the important stories from across the country through music and activities.

START at the Gallery Sunday 3 December 2017 – Wrapping & Weaving

Listen to the tales behind the works of art in TARNANTHI then wrap and weave your own story into a work of art.

START at the Gallery and the START Art Club are proudly presented by the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation.
