150 Years of the Adelaide Central Market
The Adelaide Central Market celebrated 150 years of stories, people and recipes in February 2019.
On Saturday 23 January 1869 at 3.15am a group of Market gardeners, unhappy with trading conditions at the East End, paraded through city streets to the site between Gouger and Grote Street to sell their produce. Over 500 customers attended and all stock was sold out by 6am.
And the rest, as they say is history…
With over 70 traders under one roof, the Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere, buzzing with life and colour all year round. Offering a huge range of fresh food including fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, cheeses, bakery, smallgoods and health foods, along with some of Adelaide’s most popular cafes and eateries, the Adelaide Central Market remains Adelaide’s premier food destination for multicultural cuisine and fresh produce.
The Adelaide Central Market Authority is a subsidiary of the City of Adelaide and is charged with the management, operations and marketing of the Market to ensure its iconic standing is enhanced and maintained to the benefit of customers, traders, city and the wider community.

The Market is open for business Tuesday – Saturday.
- Tuesday 7.00am – 5.30pm
- Wednesday* 9.00am – 5.30pm*
- Thursday 9.00am – 5.30pm
- Friday 7.00am – 9.00pm
- Saturday 7.00am – 3.00pm
- Closed Sunday and Monday
- *Optional trading

The Adelaide Central Market remains OPEN as normal during the combined Market Square and Market Expansion projects. The Market is still accessible from its usual Grote and Gouger street entrances. All access from UPark Central Market will also stay the same.
