ANZAC Day Services in Adelaide – Thursday 25 April 2019
ANZAC Day is held annually on April 25 and includes commemorations right across Australia. The largest gathering in South Australia is in the city of Adelaide where a number of activities are planned throughout the day.
ANZAC Day 2019 includes the following:
- Youth Vigil (ANZAC Day Eve – click here for information)
- Dawn Service
- ANZAC Day March
- Cross of Sacrifice Service
- ANZAC Day Hub at Torrens Parade Ground
The Dawn Service is a valued tradition on ANZAC Day and is always a deeply moving experience for both young and old. In the city it is held at the National War Memorial on the corner of Kintore Avenue and North Terrace. The service begins at 6.00am, but it is a good idea to get there a bit earlier to find yourself a spot.
ANZAC Day March
The ANZAC Day March will commence at 9.30am from North Terrace, Adelaide, from the SA National War Memorial, and turns right onto King William Road. The march concludes at the Cross of Sacrifice in Pennington Gardens, North Adelaide.
Spectators are invited to line both North Terrace and King William Road (between North Terrace and the Adelaide Bridge). Up to 6,000 people are expected to participate in the ANZAC Day March and ABC Television will also provide a live telecast.

Cross of Sacrifice Service
A Remembrance Service is held at the Cross of Sacrifice in Pennington Gardens, North Adelaide, from 11.30am, immediately after the ANZAC Day March concludes. This activity provides a significant finale to the commemorations, with the Dawn Service representing a funeral, the March representing the walk to the grave site and the service at the Cross of Sacrifice representing the burial. The general public are welcome to attend this service.
ANZAC at Torrens Parade Ground
After the March visitors, veterans, family and the public are welcome back at the Torrens Parade Ground to meet up with mates and enjoy food and refreshments. Volunteers from ex-service organisations and ADF units will sell drinks and food to raise funds for their groups. Your support is welcome. Please include time at Torrens Parade Ground.
A massed pipe band will play when the Cross of Sacrifice service finishes and there will be Two Up around lunchtime along with displays of militaria.

The new ANZAC Centenary Memorial Garden Walk was officially opened on Saturday 23 April 2016. The 280 metre Memorial Walk runs along Kintore Avenue, linking the South Australian National War Memorial to the Torrens Parade Ground, where many service personnel left for war.
A 70 metre interpretive wall, made from local black granite and an open blade fence along the Government House eastern boundary are key features of the design.
The granite wall depicts Australian society through a century of conflict and honours the more than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have died in conflict since Federation.
If you are planning to drive to attend any of the events on ANZAC Day please note there will be no parking on the Torrens Parade Ground or on the western end of Victoria Drive. There is parking on the eastern end of Victoria Drive (from Frome Road), however, this fills up very quickly, so be prepared to walk. Alternatively, plan to park in one of the multi-storey car parks around the CBD or take public transport.
