April School Holiday Online Program: Wonders of the Earth

Monday 20 April 2020 to Friday 24 April 2020

During the school holidays, the museum lawns and galleries would normally be alive with school children. As the South Australian Museum is currently closed, it is opening it’s virtual doors to bring the wonders of the Museum to you at home with it’s first digital school holiday program.

Each day from Monday 20 April to Friday 24 April, the South Australian Museum will bring you a new school holiday program based video. You can watch these videos from the Content for Connection page.

Mineral Monday – Monday 20 April 2020

On Monday 20 April 2020 you’re invited to join a behind the scenes tour of the Minerals Gallery with much loved mineral maestro, Senior Collections Manager Earth Sciences, Ben McHenry.

Fossil Hunter – Tuesday 21 April 2020

On Tuesday 21 April 2020, go on an adventure with Mike Gemmell, former Discovery Centre Manager, and fossil hunter extraordinaire. Mike even has a fossil named after him! Get tips from Mike on what to look for when you are out and about looking for fossils.

Meet a Rockstar – Wednesday 22 April 2020

On Wednesday 22 April 2020 it’s time to meet a real rock star! Travel back in time to 550 million years ago with world-renowned researcher Diego Garcia-Bellido and explore Ediacara fossils, which are the oldest known complex forms of life on Earth.

Making paint from chalk and household finds – Thursday 23 April 2020

On Thursday 23 April 2020 you’ll learn how to make paint from goodies in your kitchen cupboard with much-loved artist Claire Russell, and how nature can inspire you to make your own paint pigments when you step outside.

Early years: Minerals – Friday 24 April 2020

On Friday 24 April 2020 it’ll be time for little people to shine! Join Emma from Young Explorers (a program designed for three to five year olds) to find out about her favourite rock from middle Earth.

Kaurna sharing with Rodney O’Brien – Friday 24 April 2020

As a final hurrah for the April school holiday program the Museum will be posting an additional video on Friday 24 April 2020. Join respected Kaurna man Rodney O’Brien to hear about the practices of ochre trade.
