Be enchanted by Adelaide Botanic Garden after dark with Botanica Lumina, a curated program of evening events that will keep you entertained through the cooler months.

As twilight descends, immerse yourself in a creatively curated program of events that present the garden in a new light.

Spanning Adelaide’s cooler months from April to October, Botanica Lumina offers something for everyone with an assortment of music, art, film, food and cultural experiences of all ages and interests.

Throw on a jacket, pack a beanie and move through the magic of a moonlit garden. Take in Botanica Lumina’s ambient lighting, listen and inhale as the sounds and scents of the outdoors comes alive at night. Finally, relax with delicious food & drink and become part of evening experiences you’ll remember.

After-Dark Scavenger Hunt 

Thursday 15 April 2021 | Tickets $15 (under 2 is free)

Gather your family, grab a torch and join the Adelaide Botanic Gardens for an exciting Scavenger Hunt under the this school holiday. It’s a special way to explore your city botanic garden, when night critters come out and mysterious noises tickle your ears. Over the course of an hour, you will head off on an expedition through the garden with your family to reach plotted activity stations and complete fun side activities along the way. There will be clues to find, things to collect, discoveries to be made. Focused on the senses, you’ll meet night creatures, listen to stories and interact with our natural environment. Bring a torch or headlamp, water, sturdy walking shoes and a jacket. Your Scavenger Hunt Kit will be provided on check-in.

Edward Scissorhands – Outdoor Screening

Edward Scissorhands is a classic 1990’s film about an artificial man who was never completely constructed. He has scissors for hands and leads a solitary life. One day a suburban lady meets him and introduces him to her world. As their story unravels, you are taken on a romantic fantasy journey that makes you laugh and cry. From trimming hair to hedges and creating beautiful topiaries, come and enjoy seeing Edward work his magic with his scissorhands.

Suitable for older children, teenagers, young adults and adults who want a flash back to this 1990s hit. Rated PG.

Botanica Lumina presents an enchanted evening of music in the fascinating, heritage-listed Santos Museum of Economic Botany. Join acclaimed musicians, Celia Craig on oboe and Michael Ierace on piano for an intimate and exquisite recital programmed to soothe, delight and relax. Featuring a diverse and delightful repertoire that spans Rogers to Gershwin and Puccini to Mozart, Enchanted will take you on a rich acoustic musical journey inspired by the Garden and themed around love, colour, joy and moonlight.

Garden After-dark History Tour

Friday 14 may 2021 | Tickets $25 (Available from 8 April 2021)

Discover where the lunatic asylum once was and what was the Deadhouse used for. Wander past ancient trees that spread roots before the garden was formed, and hear how the site once housed zoo animals. Visit buildings steeped in history, including the Palm House and the Museum – the last of its kind. Stories from yonder years will be shared; some will haunt and some will surprise, all while walking through the darkness of the night. Bring your own torch.

Night Tour: Goodman Building 

Friday 14 May 2021 | Tickets $25 (Available from 8 April 2021)

On this brand new Botanica Lumina tour, you will delve behind-the-scenes through timber-clad corridors and past curious artefacts. Take a sneak peek into the Director’s office and beautiful boardroom, and admire the building’s original detailing. Hear about the building’s current role, the on-site Seed Conservation Centre, and what precious treasures are locked within their sub-zero-degree banks. Once used as the management centre of the Adelaide Tram Network, these walls have many stories to tell.

Night Tour: Old Tram Barn

Friday 14 May 2021 | Tickets $25 (Available from 8 April 2021)

Enjoy an after dark tour of the heritage-listed building that once housed the original fleet of Adelaide trams. Tram Barn A now houses the State Herbarium and is a centre for critical plant science and conservation. Join the Herbarium’s Chief Botanist as she shares the stories held within the building’s walls. Learn about its origins as the East End’s transport hub and how it now safe-guards over one million plant specimens instead. Discover the building’s history, current purpose and what the future may hold.
