City Lights | Free Light Trail | Illuminate Adelaide | 16 Jul – 1 Aug 2021

Illuminate Adelaide light festival

City Lights – Free Family Friendly Event – Illuminate Adelaide

Embrace the cold and explore the city, but not as you know it. For 17 nights, Adelaide’s city streets will be transformed; laneways and open spaces will be turned into a nocturnal playground of projections, imagination and light.

This free light trail as part of the new annual winter festival, Illuminate Adelaide, will span the city and bring together local, national and international artists and innovators to present cutting edge works on a scale Adelaide has never seen. There will be over 40 free installations, projections and immersive experiences.

From large scale installations to brilliant projections and immersive works, everyone can take part simply by downloading the map and following the lights through Adelaide city precincts.

Map and full program coming in May.

City Lights encompasses three individual precincts within the Adelaide CBD: North, West and East. Choose one, two or all three precincts to explore.

North Precinct:

City Lights in the North Precinct brings North Terrace’s iconic heritage buildings and hidden laneways to life with fireflies, lasers, desert pop art and stunning projections.

Immerse yourself in the gentle giants of Airship Orchestra by ENESS, be transfixed by the shimmering lights of Studio Toer’s Firefly Field, take in Kaylene Whiskey’s playful and thought-provoking journey into culture, identity and Country, and be engrossed by a brand new commission by the groundbreaking Atong Atem.

Plus, don’t miss Pixel Ninjas, in association with Rising Sun Pictures, as they bring their homegrown Hollywood magic to Lot Fourteen. And look out for Tim Gruchy’s stunning look into nature’s hidden energies along North Terrace.

West Precinct:

A big night in the West End gets a whole new meaning as Vans The Omega and an all-star team of international and local artists reimagine the city’s architecture and atmosphere. From Hindley Street to Light Square, The Big Picture Series blends street art, augmented reality and projections to create interactive experiences on a bold new scale.

Plus, don’t miss Russian art collective Tundra as they land in the West End to share Row, a perception-shifting installation.

East Precinct:

From Rundle Street to Rundle Mall, the East End is one of the city’s most-loved and well-travelled strips — but you’ve never seen it like this. The East Precinct of City Lights invites us to look up to the heavens and back to the past. Start the trail at East End Echoes – an eye-catching audiovisual dive into the histories and characters of the city, created by illuminart along with various artists. Soon after you’ll find Sky Castle by ENESS — an inflatable, deconstructed rainbow in the heart of Rundle Mall which will transform Adelaide’s retail centre into an interactive dreamscape of colour and light.
