City Lights – Illuminate Adelaide 2023

City Lights has once again brought Adelaide’s city streetscapes alive with colour, light and interactive fun and it’s all free to view. If you like games and interactive installations, North Terrace is an ideal starting point. It’s so much fun for families. This year, one of the highlights of City Lights is Into the Light, a spectacular and inspiring light display on the facade of Government House that celebrates some of South Australia’s most influential and innovative women.

Play & Go Tips for seeing City Lights:

We explored the NORTH PRECINCT and started at Government House (corner of King William), which has a brilliant doco projection, celebrating inspiring SA women in different fields.

Then we travelled East seeing giant rabbits, many interactive games, the Art Gallery lit up, fireworks in trees and more.

Kids may be tempted to climb or sit on these cute inflatable rabbits but they’re not particularly robust or designed to be sat on or jumped on. Your kids may be allowed to gently pat them but if your kids sit on them, the assistants will ask them to hop off.

If you love beautiful projected artworks, then make a beeline for The Pearl, which envelops the facade of the Art Gallery with a stunning interpretation of ‘The Pacific’.

Remember there are water features in front of the SA Museum and the State Library, so avoid them if your kids are likely to dip their hand in and get wet!

This year’s Museum lawns are home to a fun and interactive display, Affinity, which kids will love to explore.

The installations are different to previous years. This year is particularly interactive with lots of opportunities to touch and play, which is great for kids.

There’s even a Gin Bar, Lumen, on the University of Adelaide lawns.

North Terrace is flat and suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Some areas are dark so keep an eye on your kids – dress them in bright colours to see them easier. Cars are travelling along the road here still (although it is reduced to 25km per hr).

There are installations right up to Frome Road. If you continue along to East Terrace you will find Base Camp where there are food, drinks and treats like donuts and light up fairy floss. There are fire pits here you can sit around – take some sticks and marshmallows to toast.

At Gawler Place you can detour to Rundle Mall for the musical trumpets installation there.

Rug up, and go and explore. It’s like Christmas in July with beautiful lights to see.

This is totally FREE, so there’s no excuse not to go check it out.
