Easter at Home | Ideas for Families for the Easter Long Weekend 2020

Easter at Home

The message is clear for Easter in 2020 – we must stay home.

The Easter Bunny is still allowed to visit, so there is no excuse not to organise the annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday 12 April!  However, there will be no visiting friends and family, camping trips, day trips, or picnics at the park this year.  The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in self distancing rules and for the safety of everyone in our communities the advice is for everyone to please stay home.

So, we need to make the most of what we have and Easter is a time to reflect.  Families can spend time in the kitchen, help the kids with some creative Easter projects and indulge in a little bit (or a lot) of chocolate!

Easter Traditions – At Home

Backyard Camping – pitch the tent in the backyard for the long weekend.  If you can set up a fire pit to cook meals and toast marshmallows.

Easter Egg Hunt – get up early before the little ones (or big ones who still love this tradition!) and hide Easter eggs in the garden.  Decorate a basket or make one from cardboard (kids art project). Do you usually do a big Easter egg hunt with family or friends? Since it’s not an option this year, you could organise for all the families on your street to do a simultaneous egg hunt at a set time Sunday morning. Everyone hides their Easter eggs in their front yard and must stay in their own yard, but get to share in the excitement and joy together at a physical distance.

Easter Picnic – put together a picnic to enjoy in the backyard (or balcony/porch/living room if in an apartment).  Set out a picnic rug, cushions and blankets on the ground (or floor) and set up your Easter feast.

Easter Biscuits – get the kids to help decorate Milk Arrowroot biscuits with icing and simple colourful toppings. Put them into cellophane bags, zip lock bags or a container and drop them into family and friends’ letterboxes, with or without chocolates.

Do Holiday Things Together

🐰 While we can’t go to any of the usual places for entertainment or dining, we can feel like we’re on holiday by not cooking. Get take-away – it will be just like room service. Many local restaurants are doing home delivery and takeaway, so you can have something a little bit fancier than usual.

🐰 Go for a walk or bike ride around your neighbourhood and explore different areas.

🐰 Don’t do any cleaning or worry about the laundry for at least one whole day (or more).

🐰 Play some fun games – cards, board games, get out the old SingStar, Nintendo, Wii.

🐰 We can’t catch up with family in person, but we can still keep in touch by phone or video call – just like if we were away on holiday. Facetime or Zoom a catch up so you can still see each other and say hello.

We have heaps of ideas for fun activities at home. See our guide below for ideas:

The Dog Who Saved Easter (2014)
