Emily Loves to Bounce | Review

The creative geniuses behind award-winning, internationally renowned Patch Theatre have once again managed to produce more brilliant theatre for children with Emily Loves to Bounce, loosely based on the book of the same name by Michael Stephen King. When Henry introduces Emily into Amy’s orderly world it becomes disrupted. However, it’s not long before they are exploring, creating and imagining stories together, with the boxes and balls becoming exciting objects to play with, in and around.

The characters and props are introduced through a series of playful interactions. Watching the characters is like watching children play which may explain why our audience seemed instantly drawn in and able to relate to them.

Amy (Sarah Brokensha) is sensible and likes order, with her boxes neatly arranged. Henry (James Smith), on the other hand likes balls that are unpredictable and are an extension of his imagination. Brokensha and Smith deliver a perfectly polished and extremely well-choreographed performance, but are still able to convey childlike and spontaneous playfulness. They are a delight to watch.

Boxes that move, glow and hide add to the surprise and delight of the audience while balls and lanterns glowing in the dark add plenty of colour and movement and create a sense of wonder.

It was a delight to watch talented performers Rachel Bruerville and Belinda Gehlert emerge from their hiding places within the boxes (all while playing musical instruments) to then become imaginary “sardines in a can”, squeezed into one box alongside Amy and Henry. Having two musicians playing throughout the performance helped to tell the story and add humour beautifully.

Patch Theatre have done it again – taken the most simple ideas, and tools and cleverly created a  show that will leave audiences smiling and their minds filled with visual scenes that will always be fondly remembered.
