My Family Is Weirder than your Family: Josh Earl | Something on Saturday | Review 2016

My Family is Weirder Than Your Family

My Family is Weirder Than Your Family Review

Do you ever feel like you’re the only normal one in your family? That everyone else that shares a last name or a roof with you is just a little bit crazy? Well rest assured that Josh Earl feels your pain!

Josh Earl, host of ABC1’s Spicks and Specks, presents this stand-up comedy show for kids as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s Something on Saturday program. My Family is Weirder Than Your Family is a 40 minute show of funny songs, stories and conversations built around the everyday quirks that make up our families.  Cousins, siblings, grandparents and parents all come up against Earl’s wit in a friendly and relatable show suitable for kids from as young as 4 up to pre-teens.

Josh Earl strikes the critical balance of silliness and dry humour that keeps both kids and grownups engaged. He is generous in his time allowing children to interact throughout the show and he encourages his young audience to come up to chat afterwards. Unfortunately in doing this he leaves himself open to Mr 4’s critique: “Did you know bums aren’t funny? I didn’t laugh even once” (he definitely did laugh – more than once in fact)!

There is a strong bum/pop-off theme that carries on throughout the show, guaranteed to get a laugh from the young and young-at-heart, Earl manages to pull this off without resorting to being crass proving that there is much more substance to Earl’s humour.

Without a doubt it is Josh Earl’s charm and personable nature that wins over his audience, both young and old. He promises to be back for the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2017 and is definitely worth keeping an eye out for a fun, easy and enjoyable show for the whole family.

Josh Earl’s ‘My Family is Weirder Than Your Family‘ held two shows at The Space Theatre on Saturday 13 August 2016. Look out for future shows and releases at Josh Earl’s website here.
