Burnside Outdoor Swimming Pool in Hazlewood Park, now known as the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside.
Nextdoor to the fabulous Hazelwood Park Adventure Playground is an outdoor swimming centre with 3 pools set amongst shady gum trees with plenty of grassy areas and fantastic facilities for the whole family.
The Burnside Swimming Centre underwent a multi-million dollar redevelopment in 2014 and was renamed the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside. The main pool is an 8 lane, 50 metre lap pool, plus there are two more pools designed for learners and toddlers. The centre also has a cafe/kiosk and changerooms.
The centre holds a swim school teaching water safety and learn to swim programs for children from 12 months of age through to adult lessons. Lap swimming is available and they also host the annual VacSwim program during the summer holidays.
The Learners’ Pool
The middle family pool (pictured above) has steps right along the length of the pool, leading into the water and features little observation viewing windows. Just go down the stairs along the side (see below) to look through the windows – kids love to wave to you through these.
The Toddler Pool
The toddler pool includes some fun water play equipment with water spraying from arches and a few other pieces. This area is not shaded by a shade structure, however, with tall trees around, there will be times during the day which it will be shady anyway. The other end of the toddler pool does include a shade structure.
The main pool has a sloped depth of 1.1 to 1.8 metres. There is a long ramp entry as well as steps to enter the pool. An aquatic wheelchair is available at the pool to assist with entry if required. All of the outdoor pools are heated to 27 degrees.
Burnside Pool’s Park Setting
The three pools are situated in a beautiful park setting with plenty of tall trees offering shade throughout the day. There are benches for sitting, picnic tables, BBQs and of course lots of grassy areas for picnics.
Burnside Pool Cafe/Kiosk
The cafe has seating with tables both outside and inside (if you prefer to be in air-conditioned comfort) and offers espresso coffee, ice creams and snacks as well as hot food and sandwiches. There is also a service window to Hazelwood Park and it’s open throughout the pool season.
Burnside Pool Playground
There is a playground for little ones located near the toddler pool, plus another playground with equipment for older kids.
Burnside Pool Accessibility
- Accessible toilets: 2 family/disabled toilets, 1 ambulant toilet in men’s change room and 1 ambulant toilet in female change room.
- Disabled car parking: 2 spaces accessed via service drive in Hazelwood Park.
- Access ramps into building an around pools.
- Ramp entry into Main pool.

Burnside Pool ‘before’ photos
Below are a few pics of the old swimming centre before the 2015 redevelopemnt.
The photo above (at bottom right) shows what the cafe looked like from the outside of the centre. As you can see below there is a shaded outdoor area with tables and chairs. This is great for anyone visiting the playground at Hazelwood Park (one of our favourites), just across the park, and would like to come over for a snack.
If you are puzzled about the name of the swimming centre, here is the info offered on the City of Burnside website:
The Centre has taken back its original name …
George Bolton was Mayor of Burnside 1952-54 and 1962-67. Despite much public disapproval he eventually won the fight to build the pool in Hazelwood Park and in 1966, the pool was opened and named in his honour. The official name of the complex was the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside, but over the years it has come to be known as the Burnside Swimming Centre. At the council meeting on 8 July 2014 Council moved a motion to return to the original name – the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside.
