The Giraffe Safari Animal Experience at Monarto Safari Park will leave you with life long memories of these majestic animals.
Be prepared to be licked by a ginormous giraffe as they gently loop their blue tongue around a carrot held out by even the littlest hands.
As soon as we arrived at Monarto we checked into the Visitor Centre to let them know we were here for our behind-the-scenes animal experience. Because we were a couple of hours early, we had time to enjoy a ride on the Zu-Loop shuttle bus through the park, as well as a walk over to the Chimpanzees. We then headed back to the visitor centre where we were required to meet five minutes before our scheduled booking.
Our guide met our group of six (maximum booking size is 11) and then off we went to the private areas away from public access for our Giraffe Safari experience.
It’s hard to describe how it feels standing in front of the world’s tallest living mammal, but it’s safe to say we were completely blown away by their sheer size as they slowly wondered up to us as soon as they saw us arrive.
A full bucket of carrots was waiting for us to share amongst the group and hand feed the ever-so-gentle giraffe their favourite treat. It was truly a magical experience to see them in such close proximity and we were in complete awe of their gentle nature.
The first giraffe to arrive, Tambo, was by far the most eager to receive carrot after carrot, until the other males in the group gradually wondered over to see what they were missing. They are just so quiet, calm and very, very gentle, so you wouldn’t need to be concerned with even very young children feeding them.
Monarto Safari Park is home to the largest giraffe herd in Australia. There are eleven giraffes in their drive-through habitat and a bachelor group of six bulls inhabit the off-limits area of the park – four of which we met during the Giraffe Safari.
The 45 minute Giraffe Safari is a wonderful experience to share as a family, and would also make a truly memorable and unique gift (the couple in our group received theirs as a wedding present). We are looking forward to experiencing another behind-the-scenes treat again one day, with the Rhino Interactive high on our list!
