Great Book Swap | State Library | 4 Sep 2024

Make a difference to children and families living in remote Australian communities by visiting the State Library on Indigenous Literacy Day.

The State Library of South Australia is again supporting the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) and hosting a Great Book Swap on Wednesday 4 September 2024.  The event is part of Indigenous Literacy Day celebrations and everyone is invited to visit the Library on the day to browse the bookstall and take a book in exchange for a note or gold coin donation. All the money raised supports the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to provide new, culturally relevant books to remote Indigenous Communities.

Access to books in remote communities is challenging, as there are often no libraries or bookstores.  Director State Library of South Australia says,

“We are proud to be part of the Great Book Swap again this year. This event not only promotes literacy but also bridges the gap for children in remote Indigenous Communities, ensuring they have access to the books and stories that can inspire and empower them.”

“We’d love to see lots of people visit the Library and help us to beat last year’s total of $1700. Together, we can make a difference for a more inclusive future.”

The ILF carefully chooses culturally relevant books with about 50% being by Indigenous authors or illustrators. This is important as it allows the children to see themselves and their culture reflected in the stories, helping to build a sense of connection, belonging and pride.

If people can’t make it on the day, they can still help by making a donation on the State Library of South Australia’s Great Book Swap donation page here.
