Hahndorf Christmas Village

Explore the vibrant village of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills as it decks the halls for Christmas in 2018.

It’s that special time again when you untangle the fairy lights, set up the Christmas tree, and look for the perfect place to get in the holiday spirit. This is your chance to discover Hahndorf at the most magical time of year with last-minute gift shopping, restaurants and cafes available for tasty meals, cellar doors pouring delicious drinks and a whole lot of entertainment guaranteed to delight all ages.

This year’s highlights include a human snow globe, a gingerbread village, a children’s trail, magical lighting and Santa’s Cave at the Old Mill. Also check out the famous Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt at C3 Church, as well as the artisan markets at the Hahndorf Academy and the Gathered Markets at The White House. These all include a range of handcrafted items.

NOTE: The Christkindlmarkt is a pet-free event, with the exception of service animals. Pets are welcome on the Main Street of Hahndorf but please keep in mind there may be large crowds that may frighten animals.


Children’s Trail

Go on an ultimate Christmas trail, visiting participating businesses, each handing out special treats for the kids. Meet the makers, creators and local business owners, hear their stories and grab some unique presents for under the Christmas tree. Kids will be able to collect stamps from each trader along the way to go into the draw to win a big prize pack for the whole family to enjoy.


Giant Snow Globe

Main Street, Hahndorf | FREE

Hahndorf can’t guarantee snow like a German Christmas Village but they can (almost) create it. The giant Christmas snow globe is going to be an amazing sight, nestled in the garden next to the Hahndorf Academy.


Photo Opportunities

Main Street, Hahndorf | FREE

Hahndorf has always had the traditional cut-out frames dotted along the street for fun family photos, but they’re taking it to the next level this year. Along with a new installation at the German Village Shop, they will have Christmas Elves in the Beerenberg Forest, located in the Pioneer Gardens, for family photo fun. This is the perfect opportunity to create a sensational family Christmas card. A number of traders will also be joining in the fun, so look out for more photo opportunities along the main street.


Santa’s Mailbox

2/57 Main Street, Hahndorf | FREE

Bring your wish lists and letters for Santa and the Post Office will have a special mailbox, sending mail directly to the North Pole.


Gingerbread Village

Main Street, Hahndorf, FREE

Just like in Germany, Hahndorf will be embracing the tradition of gingerbread at Christmas. Join a gingerbread man decorating workshop at the Hahndorf Academy, then run, run, run, as fast as you can, to go play in the gingerbread garden at Alec Johnson Park.

Magical Lighting

The street will be alive, as the stores along Hahndorf’s main street decorate their shopfronts with the magic of lighting and decorations. Even the street posts will be dressed with garlands and twinkling lights.


Santa’s Cave

Main Street, Hahndorf | FREE

The big man in red, Santa Claus, will be setting up his chair in the Heritage Room at the Old Mill Hotel for all the children to visit and share their Christmas wishes.


Hahndorf Academy Artist Markets with Workshops & Kids Zone

Hahndorf Academy, 68 Main Street, Hahndorf | FREE (workshops $5 – $10)

This part of the Christmas Village is a yuletide paradise all on its own, complete with a local pop-up café offering gingerbread decorating for kids. In the Kids’ Zone, you’ll find fun workshops ranging from $5 to $10, where the kids can make tin craft ornaments, Christmas decorations, gum leaf prints, books and cards.

The 12 South Australian artists and makers holding stalls here will be offering everything from ceramics, jewellery and prints, to illustrations, scarves, beauty products and cards. The Hahndorf Academy shop will also be trading late, selling the work of talented Adelaide artists, as usual. It’s the perfect place to shop ethically this Christmas, support your local creatives, and impress family and friends with unique gift ideas.


Gathered White Christmas Market

The White House, 90 Main Street, Hahndorf | FREE

Open until 10pm all weekend, an incredible haul of goodies will be available from the 60 stalls in the Gathered White Christmas Market. You’ll be able to find something for everyone left on your Christmas present list, from homewares, candles, jewellery, clothing, gardening, skincare and more. Shop around while you sip on wine and cocktails, nibble on gourmet treats, groove out to the live music entertainment, and try your hand at the workshops on offer.

Hahndorf’s Christkindlmarkt is a European-style market is run by the C3 Church in the Adelaide Hills. It will be back again this year with over 50 stalls, delicious eats and treats, and charming carols by candlelight.

Late Night Shopfront Trading

Keeping their doors open late into the night, you can expect extended trading hours from your favourite Hahndorf shopfronts. Pop in and say hello to the locals, while you poke around for stocking fillers. Whether it’s a personalised collar for your furry friend from The Leathersmith & Bush Gallery, a handcrafted knife for the chef in your life from the Hahndorf Knife Shop, or some tasty sweets from Humbugs of Hahndorf, there really is something unique for everyone between all of the Hahndorf Traders.
