Hazelwood Park: Flying Fox Adventure and a Whole Lot More…
Hazelwood Park Playground, set amongst towering Gum trees has been a popular play space for children of all ages since it was completed in September 2010.
My kids refer to this beloved place as the ‘Flying Fox’ park so no prizes for guessing what is one of the favourite pieces of equipment – yes, the dual flying fox – because it’s always more fun to fly alongside a friend!
Swings
There are a few different types of swings to suit children of all ages including the wonderful Liberty swing, kindly donated by Variety SA so children with disabilities don’t miss out.
Basket Swing
The blue basket swing below allows kids to pile in together to share the fun.
Climbing net
The five metre tall climbing net still makes me a little nervous, even with my little monkeys, but what a sense of achievement kids get when they reach the top.
“Mummy, look at me!” they say with huge grins. I guess it makes the risk factor worth it.

Climbing mound
It’s hard to miss the spectacular climbing mound which is fun to scale to get a view over the park. The climb takes you to the top of the big slide as well as a smaller wide slide which allows for dual sliding.
Hazelwood Park’s sandpit with dinosaur fossils
You can bring along some buckets and spades for sandpit play. Budding little palaeontologists may even discover some dinosaur fossils with a little bit of digging.
Hazelwood Park’s roundabout
The roundabout below is super popular to take for a spin.
Clatter bridges and pipes
There are clatter bridges to walk across and those pipes where you talk into one, while your friend listens at another.
There are spinners; paths to meander and wooden beams to balance and walk across.
The old streamroller
An old steamroller is fun to climb and ‘drive’.
There is plenty of open space surrounding the playground where you can bring balls or cricket gear to play.
Burnside Swimming Centre
Across the other side of the park you’ll see the George Bolton Swimming Centre which is open from October to April. It underwent a multi-million dollar upgrade which was completed in 2015. Read our review of the upgraded George Bolton Swimming Centre here.
Hazelwood Park facilities
Barbecue facilities in the surrounding park are very popular on the weekends amongst the shady trees.
It’s a great place to enjoy picnics, bbqs, family and friends gatherings, and birthday parties.
There are a couple of areas with a table and benches within the playground, with shelter, as well as other seating dotted around the play space.
You will find toilets just near the swimming centre.
Play & Go Tips and our verdict on Hazelwood Park Playground
Please note that although there is some fencing between the car park and the playground, it is not fully fenced all around. Therefore it is necessary to keep a close eye on toddlers and younger children.
Hazelwood Park provides a fabulous diverse space for physical, explorative and interactive play opportunities. Children can have hours of fun imaginative play here. My kids try and stretch it out as long as possible when we are here with “Just one more turn please…” over and over again, when it’s time to go home!
