Bastille Day at the SA Maritime Museum

Celebrate Bastille Day at the SA Maritime Museum with a special offer for French nationals

Make a date with the South Australian Maritime Museum on Thursday 14 July 2016 to celebrate Bastille Day. Embracing the Francophile in all of us, Adelaideans can experience the exquisite illustrations by French artists made during Nicolas Baudin’s exploration of Australia in – The Art of Science: Baudin’s Voyagers 1800 -1804 and discover the strong connections between France and Australia dating back 120 years.

French Gain Free Entry on Bastille Day at the SA Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum has a special offer just for people who were born in France. French nationals can simply present their passport upon entry on Thursday 14 July 2016 and they will receive free admission (one free entry per person – passport must be shown to gain entry, valid 14 July 2016 only).

Lavishly funded by Napoleon Bonaparte, Baudin’s expedition agenda was to discover and study natural sciences. The exhibition showcases original sketches and paintings created by Baudin’s artists Charles- Alexandre Lesueur and Nicolas-Martin Petit during the voyage of 1800-1804. Lesueur and Petit created their paintings and drawings on the shores and off the coasts of Australia and captured some of the first European views of Australian animals, landscapes and some of the first portraits of Aboriginal people.

The exhibition highlights the aesthetic beauty and detail of the art works but also emphasises that these were the scientific photographs of the era. The drawings document in minute detail new species, people, and landscapes—introducing them to audiences in Europe and beyond.

The exhibition is produced as a collaboration between leading French and Australian institutions. It is a ground-breaking project casting new light on French-Australian history.

Open daily from 10am – 5pm, the South Australian Maritime Museum is a fantastic attraction for people of all ages and great to keep the kids happy during the school holidays.
