Bay to Birdwood Run | 25 Sep 2016

bay to birdwood

The Bay to Birdwood is the largest, continually held motoring event for veteran, vintage and classic vehicles held anywhere in the world boasting a reach across a broad demographic. This is an event that truly has no age limit.

With a history spanning back to 1980, the Bay to Birdwood is one of the strongest and most loved brands in South Australia. The Bay to Birdwood consists of two events run on alternative years and features cars manufactured between 1 January 1956 to 31 December 1979. The Bay to Birdwood Run – an event for cars manufactured up to to 31 December 1959 is run on ‘even’ numbered years ie 2016, 2018, 2020…..

The Bay to Birdwood is a community icon event involving over 5,000 participants in entrant vehicles, hundreds of volunteers and tens of thousands of spectators lining the 70km route to watch this historic motoring cavalcade as it travels through metropolitan Adelaide and the hills region on its way to its final destination, Birdwood. Here, car enthusiasts and spectators enjoy an afternoon of car displays, entertainment and the very popular judging for the Fashions in the Field. The South Australian community has truly embraced the Run (and the Classic) with continued support on the last Sunday in September each year.

The Start

The sun will just be rising over the Adelaide Hills when the very first vehicles start arriving at Adelaide Shores. It will be only 6 am but the excitement will be building as the marvellous veteran, vintage and early classic vehicles ready themselves for the Bay to Birdwood Run.

Breakfast With The Cars is a tradition with car owners and spectators. It is an opportunity to mix ‘n mingle with entrants and their vehicles. A variety of breakfasts will be provided by local vendors and washed down with jazz and other vintage entertainment at the starting line ahead of Glen Dix waving the flag at 8:30 am to entrants.

The Route

This year’s route will be altered due to the long term major roadworks on Hackney Road. See map below:

This year you can go to Campbelltown Memorial Oval from 9 am-12 pm to see vintage, veteran and early classic vehicles of all types manufactured before 31 December 1959 coming along Lower North East Road as they make their way to the hills. Bring your chair and join in to watch the parade. There will be a Lions Club of Athelstone community barbecue in the Campbelltown Memorial Oval car park if you wish to purchase food.

The Finish.

The gates at the National Motor Museum will open at 10am with the first entrant vehicles arriving at approximately 10.30 am just as the mainstage entertainment program gets underway.

Visitors can soak up the wonderful atmosphere – meandering amidst the parked vehicles, watching the judging of the Concours d’elegance and joining many of the entrants in the paddock for a pre-ordered basket filled with Adelaide Hills regional produce. Admission to the Finish also includes entry into the National Motor Museum. Visitors are encouraged to dress in pre- 1960s fashions to be selected by roving judges as finalists in the Fashions in The Field. The regional Hills produce tent will have wine by the glass and a choice of food platters from regional food producers. There will also be a wide choice of food stalls as well as activities for the kids.
