A free fun-filled weekend for the whole family

This FREE family event for children of all ages will take over the North Terrace Cultural Boulevard for two fun-filled days. Theatres, galleries, museums, universities, libraries, and gardens will be full to the brim with hundreds of children and families immersed in arts activities and dreaming BIG. Choose your adventure and discover a world of art and wonder around every turn.

Highlights

Nature Craft | By Kate Hubmayer

Be inspired by nature and create a beautiful mosaic made from seeds. Using beans, peas, rice, lentils and much more, watch as your colourful designs come to life. Crafter and author Kate Hubmayer leads children on this journey of discovery driven by creativity, free thinking and the use of all-natural materials.

Sensory Play | By Playgroup SA

It’s all about exploring and experiencing the fun with this sensory workshop from Playgroup SA.
Learn all about our world using your senses to explore, see, hear, smell and touch, and make a mess.

Cubby Building, Junk Parts and Mud Play | By Climbing Tree

Get back to nature with these messy, muddy and imaginative outdoor play stations.
Children can immerse themselves in these back-to-basics nature play areas where fun and creativity are limitless.

DreamBIG Forest | By Nonsense Inc

The whimsical DreamBIG Forest is back! Last festival’s forest accumulated 2,000 dreams, wishes and aspirations. You are invited to make the forest bigger and more inspirational than ever – add your special dream to the forest, and wander through the trees to reveal the dreams of the DreamBIG community.

Make Your Own Dukkah | By Sprout Cooking School

This interactive cooking experience gives children the chance to create their own dukkah using seeds, herbs and spices from around the world. This culinary session for the senses will see children explore the taste, smell, feel and look of ingredients from Australia and abroad.

Slacklining | By Slackline Australia

Slacklining is a balance sport that involves dynamic movement on a length of tensioned webbing. Slackline Australia offers fun and professional instruction to help you evolve your balance and take your first steps along a slackline. All ages and abilities welcome.

Being. in space | By Urban Mind & the Adelaide Botanic Garden and the Commissioner for Children and Young People

Here is your mission: you have discovered a galaxy far from home and are about to take off on an interstellar expedition to explore it. There are great challenges ahead, but the design code you must develop will help you navigate the journey, so you can safely explore all the planets in the cosmos! Five, four, three, two, ONE!

Pop Up Science | By Children’s University

Listen to a series of engaging talks covering a range of topics such as the big world of botany and the magic and wonder of science. These talks are presented by experts in their field to delight curious minds and inspire budding scientists.

Calligraphy Writing & Paper Cutting | By Confucius Institute, The University of Adelaide

Experience the beauty of the brush stroke as artists compose the characters of Chinese calligraphy with your Chinese name. Take the opportunity to learn the unique art of Chinese paper cutting. It will be a whirlwind exploration of Chinese culture for the weekend.

Drag Queen Storytime

Join Adelaide drag queen Miss Molly and The Southern Sisters as they host Drag Queen Storytime at the State Library. Miss Molly will join some of Adelaide’s favourite drag queens who will read stories to children, bringing books to life through these larger than life storytime sessions.

Weaving | By Southern Elders Weaving Group, Migration Museum

Share in the rich culture of the Kaurna people as you learn the traditional art of basket weaving. Aunty Alice Janice Rigney, from the Southern Elders Weaving Group, will lead these culture sharing workshops aimed at 10–18 year olds. Along the way, Aunty Alice, a Boankik Elder, will share traditional stories of her people, revealing the importance of handing down culture to future generations.

BIG Family Sing | By BodySONG

From the crew who brought us PUBsing comes the Big Family Sing, an intergenerational feel good sing-a-long. Enjoy the sound – sing it loud and proud. Song list will be available soon.

Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tour | By Guru Dudu

Everybody loves a silent disco, but this phenomenon has reached a whole new level with Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tour. Created in Australia but taking the world by storm, you can pop on some headphones, feel the beat and follow your funky leader around the Riverbank Precinct – with plenty of stops for dance breaks. You will enjoy interpretative dancing around local landmarks, spontaneous flash mob routines and lots of crazy improvised fun.

Protest Lab | By Centre of Democracy

Share your voice, your opinion, and your creativity at the Centre of Democracy’s Protest Lab. Make a placard, a protest poster, a campaign slogan, a badge and more as you learn about the importance of free speech for all and the right to be heard.

Dream Big in a Big House | By National Trust

Get up close to a grandfather clock and stand under a 3,000 piece chandelier. Dress up in a top hat, play some knuckle bones or make a keepsake in the interactive school room. Entry by gold coin donation with all proceeds going to the work of the National Trust of South Australia.

Government House Open Day

You’re invited to Government House Open Day, on the Sunday of the Big Family Weekend. Explore the gardens and learn about the current workings of the house from Government House volunteers.

Neo Teen Art Tours | By the Art Gallery of South Australia

Explore the Australian Collection with a Neo Teen Art Tour. Discover the collection from a unique perspective, led by 13-19 year-old trained guides. Then drop in to the vibrant, paint-spattered world of the Art Gallery of South Australia Studio as Joe Quilty teaches art tips and techniques and create a bold ‘remix portrait’ with oil pastels.

The Little Barista Program | By Bean Bar

Learn how to make the perfect coffee with Bean Bar! Find out everything you need to know to make mum or dad a special cuppa.

Family Meditation | By Lifeflow Meditation Centre

Learn meditation and mindfulness in this fun and interactive workshop for all ages. You will be guided through simple techniques to help you slow down the mind and body and focus on just being present.

Family Yoga | By Blooming Hearts Yoga

Get connected with yourself and each other in this interactive yoga workshop for the whole family. No experience necessary – just a willingness to try yoga poses, games, mindfulness, breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and creative expression.

Outdoor Stages

Located on the Museum Lawns and Goodman Lawns, the DreamBIG outdoor stages will be jam-packed with fantastic performances, workshops and interactive activities. Sing, dance, laugh and applaud all weekend. Enjoy beatboxing with MCME, the Junkyard Beats crew, It’s Rhyme Time with Little Big Book Club, music by the City of Adelaide band, and Class of Cabaret, plus many more! (the full stage program will be available online April 2019)

Regurgitator’s Pogogo Kids Show to headline the Big Family Weekend Elder Hall Outdoor Stage!

This new project sees renowned Brisbane mashup rock/electro/punk/poppin’ funtime outfit Regurgitator cooking up a sugar-soaked record written especially for kids!

Longtime Regurgitator trio Ben Ely, Quan Yeomans and Pete Kostic joined by the effervescent Koko direct from Planet Rainbow have already struck a chord with families around the country – with the album The Really Really Really Really Boring Album having quickly climbed to #1 on the Children’s iTunes chart. The band’s wildly-varied jumping castle of sounds will come as no surprise to longtime fans.  Don’t miss them at 3pm on Saturday 25 May 2019, on the Elder Hall Outdoor Stage. Read more here.
