Carclew Explore Arts 2018 Winter School Holiday Workshops

Carclew’s Explore Arts school holiday workshop program offers full day and half-day creative activities for kids aged 5 – 17 years in the stunning North Adelaide venue.

A team of professional artists present a broad range of inspiring, hands-on experiences that will nurture your child’s inner-artist and allow them to try out new experiences and make new friends.

Monday 9 July | 2-in-1 : Book half or full day

TOTALLY LIT: SCULPTURE, STORIES AND TECH | Ages: 9 – 12 (morning) Ages 5 – 8 (afternoon)
Create a sculpture featuring LED lights. Explore technology and make an artwork that glows under UV lights. Create a character or object from your imagination and light it up!

3D SELFIES: CLAY & PHOTOGRAPHY | Ages: 5 – 8 (morning) Ages 9 – 12 (afternoon)
Craft a self-portrait with clay. Introduce colour to your 3D-selfie to develop individual character features and explore experimental photography to present a section of your selfie in a framed and hung installation.

Tuesday 10 July

PAWS IN PRINT: LINO CARVING AND PRINT MAKING | Ages: 9 – 12
Transform your favourite animal into a stamp in this highly graphic and bold medium. Using Ezy Carve lino blocks, learn how to design, carve and print an artwork (or two). Then explore all the ways you can use your finished block to make framed artworks, greeting cards or fabric prints.

Offsite arts-cursion
(Drop-off and pick-up at ANIFEX, 65 King William St, Kent Town)

LIFE AT 25 FRAMES PER SECOND: ANIMATION | Ages: 13 – 17
Go on an inspirational behind the scenes tour of ANIFEX facilities and studio space. Learn about stop motion, simple lighting and camera set up from the experts then create your own cut-out animation and clay characters for a mini group animation project.

POO THE PIG: SCRIPT to PRODUCTION: DAY 1 | Ages: 9 – 12
(Day 1 of 2-day workshop)
Become part of the cast and crew for POO THE PIG. Act, devise, build, design, costumes, props and music. Together your group will create an all-original SHOW starring and produced by YOU.

ARMATURE ANIMALS: SCULPTURE | Ages: 13 – 17
Armature uses wire and modelling mediums to create astounding sculptures. Design and make your own armature sculptural animal. While you’re busy making art, enjoy heroic tales of animal adventures that have inspired famous sculptures all over the world.

POO THE PIG: PRODUCTION to PERFORMANCE: DAY 2 | Ages: 9 – 12
(Day 2 of 2-day workshop)
Transform the Carclew Ballroom into an impromptu theatre with lighting, costumes, props and music. Backstage or onstage, the day will involve learning all the tricks and techniques to put on an amazing show to perform to your families and friends.

Monday 16 July | 2-in-1 : Book half or full day

ZIGGY STARDUSTBIN: JUNK, PAINT, COSTUME | Ages: 5 – 8 (morning) Ages 9 – 12 (afternoon)
Create your own trash-fash out of found materials – a recycled runway look or a costume fit for the stage. Then rock that waste-not wardrobe and jam out on the Lost’n’Found orchestra instruments.

PINT SIZED PICASSO: COLLAGE | Ages 9 – 12 (morning) Ages: 5 – 8 (afternoon)
Draw, cut, paste and collage. Young artists explore still life with a combination of techniques. Create 2D and 3D imagery inspired by master artist Pablo Picasso.

BECAUSE COSPLAY: DRESS-UPS | Ages: 13 – 17
(Day 1 of 2-day workshop)
COSPLAY class is in session – enjoy dressing up as a character from a film, book, video game, manga or anime. Learn hand-sewing and cosplay craft techniques with Oz Comic-Con Cosplay Championships judge, Belinda Zanello.

BEATZ: DANCE | Ages 9 – 12 (morning)
How many different ways can we dance? Explore dance from across the years and the globe with Beatz Dance. Create characters and expression using your whole body. Move to music with mates in this dance-tastic session. Suitable for newbies to experienced.

BEATZ: HIP HOP | Ages 9 – 12 (afternoon)
YO! In this session Beatz will break down basic hip hop moves and flexin technique. Practice with your posse, hustle up with positions, entrances and exits and until every step is part of your muscle memory. Rehearse and get ready to rock your routine to your adoring fans (your parent and visitors at pick up time)

Refine the details of your cosplay craft techniques to bring your skills up to the superhero level you always wanted!

Thursday 19 July | 2-in-1 : Choose 1 for a half day or choose 2 for a full day

BLING THINGS: METALLIC SCULPTURE AND WEARABLE ART | Ages: 9 – 12 (morning & afternoon)
Get inspired by the unique spaces, sights, sounds & smells that make Adelaide your ‘home’ to create a wearable object with metallic coated paper. Learn mark making and 3D construction techniques to take home your unique medallion, brooch, badge or bling.

BEATZ: DANCE | Ages 9 – 12 (morning)

HACK: DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY | Ages: 13 – 17
Commercial photographer Nat Rogers teaches the tips and tricks to take your digital photography to new heights. It’s not the camera, it’s the way you use it to tell a thousand words with one frame. Kit up with your own digital tool-bag of techniques and cheats to make your photos POP.

CREATURE: COMIC ART | Ages: 13 – 17
Come and learn the ins and outs of creating comics, from planning and working out a narrative, through to lettering, panel layouts, character design and backgrounds. Make a monster comic chronicling the adventures of your own creature creation, or write a comic story based on anything your imagination can conjure up!
