Curated by Art Gallery director, Nick Mitzevich, the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Dark Heart presents more than twenty eight contemporary Australian artists and collectives, delivering their brave new visions in photography, painting, sculpture, installation and the moving image.   The Adelaide Biennial is the country’s longest running survey of contemporary Australian art and represents the Art Gallery of South Australia’s dedication to showcasing up-to-the-minute works by Australian artists.

Walk along North Terrace and you will be amazed by the incredible display directly in front of the Art Gallery.  Commissioned for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial, Ian Strange’s Landed is an architectural replica of his childhood suburban home in Perth. However, rather than being located on a polite suburban street, the house appears to have fallen from the sky and is now embedded in the fabric of North Terrace – Adelaide’s boulevard of Victorian buildings crafted in sandstone.  It’s quite spectacular and children will be amazed to witness a house that looks to be sinking into the ground.

The Art Gallery has also just unveiled the next iteration of its fabulous dedicated activity space, The Studio, and it is looking very superstitious!  It has been transformed for the first time by an artist, Adelaide based sculptor and installation artist Julia Robinson, and now represents an immersive and active art space informed by the folklore of superstitions.  Children of all ages who visit the Studio can create an imaginative good-luck talisman to wear, hang in their home or keep in their pocket.  Activities in The Studio are free and all materials are supplied.
