Folklore cafe Port Adelaide – Coffee by the Water

I was on a mission to find the best coffee in Port Adelaide and had been recommended Folklore. You probably won’t spot Folklore as you’re driving through Port Adelaide – it’s tucked away next to the Hart’s Mill right next to the Port River.
A Renew Adelaide space, Folklore is a great destination for coffee in Port Adelaide. Perched just on the edge of the river next to Hart’s Mill it offers pleasing waterfront views and easy access to the Hart’s Mill playground (read our review here). Although the building that Folklore is housed in is contemporary, the interior is cosy and informal, and oozes shabby chic vibes with retro tables, chairs, and poufs. Balcony seating is available if you want to sit outside and enjoy the view of the river – and perhaps even spot a dolphin.
The Menu at Folklore
The menu at Folklore highlights local South Australian produce and includes (on their winter menu as at July 2019) a haloumi burger, sweet and smokey beans, mushroom ragu and a delicious sounding leek, bread-and-butter pudding with shaved leg ham; as well as counter food, coffee, tea, milkshakes and cold pressed juice. We enjoyed a (generous) slice of toasted banana bread as we soaked up the winter sun, and we grabbed coffees to take away. Both the latte (standard cows milk) and the almond milk flat white were suitably strong and got the thumbs up.

Folklore: Our Verdict
Folklore is an excellent spot to pick up a cup of the good stuff if you’re in Port Adelaide and in need of caffeine. We think it would make a good rest stop if you’re walking or cycling the 3.5km Loop Trail, and it’s just around the corner from the People’s Market (Friday-Sunday) so you can get your caffeine fix before you stock up on fresh fruit and veggies. It’s also a good destination if you’re after waterfront views in Port Adelaide.
Things to Consider
We hear that from time to time if you’re lucky enough you may spot a dolphin – we didn’t but there was still enough action in the form of boats and birdlife on the river to keep my small person occupied.
We visited mid-week when it was reasonably quiet and we had super quick and friendly service – word on the street is that at other times they can get really busy. Luckily though if you’re visiting with kids in tow there’s always the fabulous Harts Mill playground to keep them busy while you grab a takeaway coffee.
