Loxton Pioneer Playground – Riverland, South Australia
Playground Review
If you are in the Riverland, it’s worth making a stop at one of the best playgrounds in South Australia. In the little town of Loxton on the Murray River, you’ll find this gem – the Loxton Pioneer Playground, which was opened in February 2015. It’s full of fabulous equipment and everything that makes a great playspace for kids of all ages. The playground, situated in the Loxton Memorial Gardens (which has over 1,100 roses) is a wonderful local attraction for families living in the area, as well as visitors to the region.
Here are some of the highlights of the Loxton Pioneer Playground:
- The centrepiece is a huge climbing frame – the PS Jolly Miller – with high cubby, various climbing apparatus and slippery dips.
- Very long, double flying fox ride
- Mousetrap wheel ride (like the one at Bonython Park)
- Hexagon multiple 6 swing set
- NEOS electronic game
- Water pump, channels and water play area
- Road safety Bike Track
- Carousel spinning roundabout
- Play frame with slides for younger kids
- BBQ and picnic tables
- Toilets
- Surrounded by beautiful gardens and grassy areas
- It is not fully fenced but is away from the main road
The PS Jolly Miller climbing frame is the centrepiece of the playground and it stands tall near the entrance of the play space. This is named after the padddle steamer Jolly Miller, built in 1866, which was the first iron steamer constructed in South Australia from raw materials. The boat sank downstream from Loxton in 1933.
It has a very tall cubby at the top of the structure which you can climb up to, then take the slippery dip down. All around the cubby there are different ways to climb. There’s also another slide which is not quite as high if you don’t want to go all the way to the top.
The roundabout carousel below gives plenty of spinning fun.
The mousetrap spinner below will keep kids on their toes. It’s just like the one at Bonython Park in Adelaide.
Race a friend on the huge flying fox cable ride below.
There are several different swing options, including this double tyre swing.
Get a group together to swing on the hexagon multi swing below, for up to six at a time.
Plus there’s a basket swing and baby swings too.
Another interesting piece of equipment is this NEOS electronic game. It plays music and sounds and there are different games to challenge you eg run around and try and hit each button that lights up randomly.
Water play is provided with the water pump, trough and channels, with sand there as well for building.
Little kids have some smaller slides and there’s the challenge of the monkey bar rings.
Little ones can climb over the little cubby tent below.
Go for a sail with friends in the row boat below, for imaginative play.
Take little bikes and scooters and ride around the bike track, where you can also practise road safety with traffic signs along the way.
There’s bbqs and picnic tables provided.
The playground is surrounded by grassy areas and is amongst the Loxton Memorial Gardens which is home to beautiful roses. There are bench seats scattered around for you to sit and enjoy.
The Loxton Pioneer Playground is beautifully maintained and is a fantastic play space for families. It’s definitely worth spending some time here – the kids will have plenty to do and you’ll probably have a hard time getting them to leave. It’s not hard to see why we’ve put it straight into our list of Top Parks & Playgrounds in SA.
