Marshmallow Playspace Re-opening | New Pelzer Park/Pityarilla Activity Hub | 29 Apr 2018

The new Pelzer Park/Pityarilla Activity Hub, including the Marshmallow Playspace, is opening on Sunday 29 April 2018

You are invited to join the City of Adelaide to celebrate the opening of the new Pelzer Park / Pityarilla Activity Hub. Explore the space while enjoying live music, face painting and food trucks.

The Pelzer Park / Pityarilla Activity Hub is unique space to interact, be active and engage with nature.  Picnic on the lush plaza, cross the renewed creek bed, roam wild in the Oxbow Playspace, bounce by the community courts, and skip around Marshmallow Playspace!

The hub is full of thoughtful details thanks to the ideas shared by the community during the “Shape the Park Lands” consultation. This project is delivered by the City of Adelaide and funded by the State Government of South Australia.

There are multiple spaces for kids of all ages and abilities to play.  Play and learn in Marshmallow Playspace: fully fenced area, interactive water play, wood climbing frame and play equipment including slides and sandpits.  Explore and imagine in the Oxbow Playspace: wild nature play, wood and rope climbing frame, boulder island and stepping stones.

The lush green plaza is a natural amphitheatre which makes for a perfect picnic spot.

Courts and Paths

The community can access a basketball half court and tennis court which can be lit by push-button lighting at night. The area can be accessed via cucling and walking paths which connect to the surrounding Park Lands.

The Creek

The section of the creek running through the activity hub has undergone a major renewal. The creek bed and new connected rain gardens have been planted with a mix of indigenous species to increase its biodiversity and will prevent weeds and erosion. The renewed creek assists with reducing the impact flooding in the South Park Lands and contributes to the ecology of the area.

The Dog Park

The Pityarilla dog park located at the Northern end of the hub, has separate sections for large and small dogs. Water fountains are accessible for dogs and their owners.

The hub provides users access to a number of facilities including shelter, two accessible BBQs and three toilets (one accessible).

The hub is a 12 minute walk from the South Terrace Tram Stop. Parking is available along South Terrace and Glen Osmond Road..

Park Name

The Kaurna translation of pityarilla is marshmallow; paying homage to the park’s Marshmallow Playground. August Pelzer was Adelaide’s city gardener from 1899 to 1932 and his influence is evident in the layout of Osmond Gardens, and elsewhere throughout the Park Lands.  The park contains several sporting facilities, and offers a location for families to hold BBQs.
