MeowMe Cat Café in Parkside – Review

Purr-fect paradise for cat fans!

Visiting an animal café, where you can cuddle real-life pets in between having a cuppa, is something you’d ordinarily associate with a city like Tokyo.

Japan’s bustling capital has cafés devoted to everything from miniature pigs to hedgehogs, owls, and cats. And it’s the latter, where the international (and interstate) trend has now swept its way across our borders…

After I read about our very own MeowMe Cat Café on Glen Osmond Road, I was excited to head there with my twin sons during the school holidays and see exactly what it entailed (boom tish!). Would fluffy felines just be wandering about the tables as we tucked into our desserts, or would they be lounging about on chairs of their choosing?

Well, no, as I found out. There’s a separate glassy ‘cat room’, which the restaurant looks in to. Up to eight people are allowed in the room at a time, and there’s a sink where you can wash your hands on the way in and on the way out. There are also guidelines to ensure the cats remain comfy in your presence, such as not using your camera flash on them or picking them up … though, of course, you can pat and play with them.

Apparently, it was lucky that we visited during the week as weekends can get super-busy, limiting your time in the cat room. This is also when representatives from Paws & Claws Adoptions are on hand, which is the feel-good part – all the kitties are rescue cats, and the café is a rehabilitation environment, where it’s hoped some customers might adopt them and provide a ‘fur-ever’ home. (One of my sons was besotted with a ginger kitten, but unfortunately our seven-year-old tabby wouldn’t be thrilled with a new housemate!)

Entry to the café is free to all customers with any food or drink purchase. Being more focused on desserts, it’s open in the evenings, and from 2pm Friday to Sunday.

MeowMe isn’t Adelaide’s only cat café either. There’s also Hashtag Meow Cat Café in (appropriately) Felixstow, and the newly opened Katze of Hahndorf. (Each café has different opening hours and booking guidelines, so check their websites before heading in).

If I was to insert an emoji to round off my review, it’d be a smiling cat-face with heart-shaped eyes, naturally!
