Mr Stink | Review

Based on the hugely popular book by David Walliams, the production of Mr Stink ticks all the boxes: a fabulous cast, fantastic set and a lovely story.

Don’t worry if you haven’t read the book version of Mr Stink – the same team that brought the 52 Storey Treehouse to Adelaide last year have put together this performance and it will not leave you disappointed.

The story starts with the main character, Chloe who is bullied at school, something many can relate to. Things are not much better at home for Chloe, having to deal with her very proper and highly ambitious mother who belittles her story-writing talent and makes her feel less important than her perfect, high-achieving sister, Annabelle. Things change when Chloe makes a friend in Mr Stink, a homeless man who shows her kindness and teaches her a thing or two about dealing with bullies, namely belching!! Despite Mr Stink’s stinkiness, Chloe befriends him and tries her best to care for him and protect him by hiding him from her disapproving mother in their backyard shed.

The perfect world which Mrs Crumb (who likes to be known as ‘Mrs Crrroooom’) has worked hard to achieve, ironically starts to unravel. However, with a bit of help from Mr Stink, in the end she learns about the importance of relationships above achievements.

The cast were fabulous, particularly Darren Sabadina who managed to switch between 3 characters – poor old Mr Crumb (Chloes Dad), Raj and The Prime Minister. Mr Crumb is a delightful character who is warm and humorous and is afraid of Mrs Crumb, even going so far as to spend all day in the laundry basket in order to hide his secrets from her. Sabadina does a great job of switching to Raj, a wannabe Bollywood star and owner of ‘Raj’s Bazaar who is full of wit and energy, particularly while doing his amusing ‘spicy’ dance.

Throughout the performance, there was plenty to keep small people amused; Mr Crumb did a silly bottom dance to his children while Mrs Crumb’s back was turned; Raj was throwing in some slapstick humour and Mr Stink farted at the Prime Minister while in the bath!

This is a feel-good play which addresses several themes – bullying, ambition at the cost of relationships and breaking down stereotypes in a way that is totally appealing for all ages. There is ample humour, great story-telling, a fantastic set and great acting which makes this a really wonderful production.
