OVO – Cirque du Soleil | 6 Dec 2012 to 6 Jan 2013 | Review

I still remember my first Cirque du Soleil show many years ago – Saltimbanco – it was like nothing I had ever seen before.

Each time I think, what could they possibly do that they haven’t done before? Well, after seeing OVO I am again blown away by the brilliance of Cirque du Soleil.

They take circus acts to a whole other level and push the boundaries of what you think the human body can do. I’m not going to spoil it for you and tell you everything they do in the show because you really just have to see it to believe it.

What I will say, is that if you haven’t seen Cirque du Soleil before, this is a theatrical experience you really must see at least once in your life. The sets are amazing and the music, played by a live band and beautiful vocals, set the scene brilliantly. It is upbeat, lively and colourful. And wait ’til you see the fabulous costumes that transform these artists into the intricate insect world of OVO.

Previous Cirque du Soleil productions have sometimes been a bit dark and perhaps a bit scary for young kids, but OVO, set in a colourful and comical insect world will make children in the audience gasp with delight. The children in the audience sitting near me were mesmerised. If you do take a child make sure you ask for a booster seat for them when you get there – they have them available complimentary for kids so they can get a better view. The show goes for 2 hours and 30 minutes (with interval) though, so I would only take kids who are capable of sitting through.

What these artists can do with a piece of rope; while balancing on their head; or holding on with one hand or one foot, is simply amazing. The last time I tried doing a hand stand against the wall I can tell you it wasn’t a graceful sight! These artists do it with such grace and ease it looks effortless, but their precision, timing and talent will blow you away. There is so much creativity in the concepts and choreography of each act.

I like to be surprised on the night, but if you would like to see a preview, plusΒ read more on the set designs, costumes, music and acts, see their website here.

Also, the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) is a venue where no matter where your seats are, you are not that far from the action (unlike say, being at the back of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre). Sure, you won’t see the intricate details of their costumes sitting at the back of the tent, but you also won’t have to look up so high during some of the high acts.
