SAPOL Road Safety Centre

SAPOL Road Safety Centre

The new SAPOL Road Safety Centre at Thebarton officially opened on Monday, 25 February 2013.  Children can bring along their own bikes to try out the mock roadway, which duplicates road conditions children are likely to encounter when riding their bicycle on the street.

Located on Port Road along side the brilliant new Bonython Park play space, the fully fenced centre incorporates realistic streets including an intersection with traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, a roundabout and numerous different traffic signs to observe.

Free to use, the centre is open for use by the public on weekends as well as public and school holidays when not required by SAPOL.  The centre helps children become familiar with correct road signage, pedestrian safety and road rules.

The Road Safety Centre can be accessed from Port Road with parking available at Bonython Park.  The area is beautifully landscaped with ample lawn space and an undercover table with bench seats.  You’ll find the police horse stables near by, along with the lake, the old playground and the exciting new Bonython Park playground and kiosk.

SAPOL Road Safety Centre traffic education programs

Traffic education programs are run during the school term with children attending the centre with their school.  Road safety presentations are provided at the centre for groups including school students, businesses, special interest groups, community groups and older-aged road users.

The earlier road safety awareness starts, the better. Our roads are extremely busy and with a range of signs and rules , roads can be confusing. The aim of our Road Safety Centre is to help children clear up that confusion, and we hope safe road use becomes second nature.  Police Commissioner Gary Burns
