The Little Mermaid | Adelaide Fringe 2014 Review

The South Australian Children’s Ballet Company’s performance of the much loved fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, is a wonderful introduction for young audiences to the world of theatre and dance.  The costumes are bright, fun and colourful and the group dance scene music is uptempo and thoroughly enjoyable.   From the underwater party opening scene the stage comes alive with singing and dancing.  The scenes vary from quiet and dramatic to uplifting and funny as performers of various size and age play their parts beautifully.

Despite some audio issues with The Spirit of the Sea reading from her scroll, the cast move effortlessly from scene to scene as they tell the story of Ariel’s dream to live on land and marry her prince.  Young Eric is quite a stand out and the touch of comedy throughout delighted the crowd.  Both Ariel and Ursula danced beautifully and I’m sure had many young ballerinas watching and wishing it may one day be them up on stage.
