What Boys Need to Hear – Encouraging Emotional Honesty in our Sons

Giving boys “permission” to express their feelings can help to prevent depression, aggression and addiction as they grow into men, according to a leading visiting educator.

World-respected authority on masculinity, Professor Andrew Reiner, will visit Prince Alfred College next week where he will present a session for families on “What boys need to hear: How the ways we talk to – and don’t talk to – boys affects them.” South Australian families are invited to attend the public presentation, to be held at the school on Tuesday 6 August from 7-8pm. Refreshments will follow the session.

Professor Reiner teaches at Towson University in the United States, covering topics such as “The Changing Face of Masculinity”. His writing appears in the New York Times, including a piece about emotional honesty that has attracted more than 1.4 million views.

“Giving boys permission for emotional honesty is the most transformative thing we can do for them, and for society,” Professor Reiner said.

“Research shows that using emotional and analytical language with young children helps them dramatically in school achievement and critical thinking skills. Yet parents are far more likely to use emotional language with their daughters than their sons. Boys are expected to be brave and show courage while hiding any fears, sadness, confusion, joy or shame. As a result, too many boys feel that they will fall short of expectations if they display these emotions and their humanity…Boys need to know they can express their emotions while feeling safe and supported.”
