Ended: WIN Tickets to TOTEM Cirque du Soleil | Play & Go Review

Cirque-Soleil-Totem2

Cirque du Soleil returns to Adelaide with a spectacular show presented under the much-loved blue and yellow Big Top. TOTEM traces the awe-inspiring journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly.

The cast features 45 performing artists from 16 countries specialising in many breathtaking acrobatic acts. TOTEM marks Cirque du Soleil’s second collaboration with acclaimed theatre and film director Robert Lepage following KÁ at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Play & Go Review

Totem is everything you expect from Cirque du Soleil. If you’re not familiar with Cirque du Soleil – it can be described as circus like you’ve never experienced before. More than just a circus, this is a live theatrical experience complete with original music performed by singers and musicians, all of which complements the visual feast before your eyes.  The costumes are crazy fabulous and the stage is clever and unique. There are also seamless theatrical illusions which will make children wonder at the magic of it all (and adults too)!  This is a slick show, choreographed and timed to perfection. The performers are absolutely amazing – the acrobatics and tricks they perform with seamless precision are jaw-dropping. The problem is they make it all look so easy, but when you think about the logistics of it, you realise how ridiculously impossible it would be to try at home!

There’s no room for error for these acts and we certainly did not see any errors when we saw the show on opening night. One of the highlights for us would have to be these amazing girls below – from Mongolia, they balance on 2 metre high unicycles, juggling bowls and teapots from head to head, all around the stage. It’s something you’ve just got to see to believe.

Then there was the grace and power of the duo fixed trapeze act. These ‘Love Birds’ (pictured below) perform 7 metres high off the stage and will make you hold your breath a few times during their beautiful performance.

Unlike ‘Ovo‘ which toured in 2012/2013 with the world of insects as the theme, Totem’s story is a little harder to follow and a bit disjointed. There also isn’t a huge grand finale act (like OVO had with the amazing trampolining insects, which was particularly fabulous). It’s a cultural fusion, with an earthy Aboriginal feel one minute; surfies doing Bollywood the next; a mad scientist and a  strange Italian romeo thrown into the mix. It doesn’t matter though that the story isn’t obvious, because the acrobatics and tricks, sets, costumes and music keep you more than entertained. It’s not dark or scary at all but the live music is very loud so keep this in mind with young children who may not be accustomed to this.

TIPS

Parking – there is always a long line up along Sir Donald Bradman Drive to enter the paid car park on the site. Also, you cannot enter the car park coming from the city (you will need to do a U-turn down near Bunnings). There is some free parking just on the other side of West Terrace, beyond Hungry Jacks or along Wakefield Street or other side streets, which is only a short walk.

Seating – no matter where you sit in the Grand Chapiteau big top you can see the stage well but please note that many of the performers do perform to the front of the stage so you will get a different view sitting on the sides. Also if you sit very close to the stage you will have to look up high to watch any aerial performances like the trapeze.

Booster seats – if you have children they do provide a limited number of booster seats for them – just ask one of the attendants when you enter.

For more information and to purchase tickets visit the Cirque du Soleil website.

The children’s discount applies to children 2 to 12 years old. Children under 2 years old are permitted to attend for free, but must remain seated on a parent’s lap at all times. Children are not permitted to be left unattended on the site of Cirque du Soleil. Tickets purchased for children must have an adult seated beside.
