World Environment Fair 2018

Ahead of World Environment Day 2018 Adelaide will once again put the environment on centre stage when it presents the World Environment Fair on 2-3 June, 2018 at the Adelaide Showground.

The Fair is a full day of fun for any age with the chance to explore and play, interact with native animals up close and learn more about products and ideas to reduce your impact on the environment.

Ambassador and headline speaker Craig Reucassel (War on Waste) along with Ranger Stacey Thomson (Totally Wild) will share their passion for tackling all things waste and protecting our native environment.

Both speakers will be sharing their ideas and knowledge on how as a community we can tackle issues like our staggering contribution to landfill and the vital conservation of native Australian wildlife. You can see Craig and Stacey present at the fair on both Saturday and Sunday, 2-3 June.

With households and communities looking for ideas on living more sustainably the Fair showcases everything from food and wine, nature and tourism, lifestyle, sustainable building, home and garden and so much more

In 2017 there were more than 85 exhibitors and over 30 amazing and inspiring speakers across three stages – the Green Theatre, Sustainability Stage and Environmental Platform. There were activities and hands on displays designed to educate, inspire and engage young and old alike. World Environment Fair 2018 is sure to impress.

It’s FREE entry for Children Under 18

Activities at the World Environment Fair:

Massive Indoor Nature Playground

World Environment Fair has commissioned Simon Hutchinson from Climbing Tree to construct the largest indoor nature play area in Australia. Having purpose-built nature play spaces including the Morialta Playground and WOMADelaide, Simon’s World Environment Fair project is bound to be fabulous. Playing in natural habitats contributes to the overall physical, cognitive and emotional development of children and with so many wonderful environmental spaces in and around Adelaide, this indoor nature play is going to be the talk of the Fair.

Green Trail

The Department of Environment and Water will once again be presenting the interactive and informative Green Trail, a huge hit with families last year providing a full day of fun for all ages. The event will also feature a real life indoor Nature Play area, which will be one of the biggest Australia has ever seen.

The Noctarium

Visit the Noctarium. Using a reverse cycle of lighting, visitors will be able to view dunnarts, hopping mice, plains rats, possums, potoroos, frogmouth, curlews, geckos, pythons, death adder, tree snakes, frogs, eel, spiders, scorpions and stick insects active during the day. Most will be displayed in landscaped cages, aviaries or aquaria and a few mammals and birds will be free-ranging. Located near the noctarium will be the python tree, so you will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures.

Animals Anonymous

Animals Anonymous is an Australian Native Animal Show that will allow you to take a close look at some awesome Australian native animals, including a baby crocodile, pythons, a bettong, a squirrel glider, a boobook owl, dragons, geckos, goannas and much more. A mobile team of wildlife demonstrators and environmental educators will host shows and present a diverse range of tame native animals. They are sure to inspire everyone to love, conserve and enjoy the awesome natural world that surrounds us.

Reptile Display

See lizards in a lizard pit, including bluetongues and shinglebacks skinks, plus bearded dragons! Learn about Australian snakes. There will even be a python tree just near the Noctarium. At World Environment Fair some of Adelaide’s most experienced reptile experts will be on hand to answer all your questions.

Bugs & Slugs

The Bugs & Slugs exhibit is a hands-on, interactive experience designed to foster the appreciation of invertebrate, biology, diversity, form, function and unique beauty. Whether it’s insects, spiders, lobsters, worms or snails they are all very important to the ecosystem. Contrary to common belief, very few are serious pests. In fact most invertebrate animals are absolutely vital to our ecosystems health, they keep our rivers and oceans clean, our soils and crops productive and recycle organic waste. Without bugs and slugs our world would be an inhospitable place.

Speakers at the World Environment Fair:

Craig Reucassel

Craig Reucassel is an Australian writer and comedian who is best known for his work on ABC’s The Chaser and is currently in the latest Chaser’s Hamster Wheel on the ABC. For two years Reucassel co-hosted the drive-time radio show Today Today on Triple J with fellow Chaser Chris Taylor. The pair returned with their Sunday afternoon show Bloody Sunday to do relief shifts for the following two years. Reucassel is presently a Patron of the Left Right Think-Tank, Australia’s first independent and non-partisan youth think-tank.

Stacey Thomson – “Ranger Stacey”

“Ranger Stacey” Thomson will be a speaker at this year’s World Environment Fair! Stacey Thomson, better known as “Ranger Stacey” started out as a National Parks and Wildlife ranger in Queensland. Stacey has appeared on Australian TV for more than 20 years. Most of us know her from the Logie award winning ‘Agro’s Cartoon Connection’ and Network Ten’s ‘Totally Wild’.

Recycling at the World Environment Fair:

One thing to do for our environment is to ensure that we recycle wherever possible and avoid hazardous items being dispatched to landfill.

If you bring your old mobile phones and printer cartridges to the Recycle Hub at the World Environment Fair, they will make sure that they are appropriately recycled, components reused & landfill avoided.
