Yelland & Papps Winery

The Brief

I was so excited today to be visiting a kid friendly winery (its been far too long between winery visits for me). I heard about this winery through a friend, and decided to check it out for myself (just me and the kids). On arrival we were greeted startled by a group of kangaroos bouncing through the paddocks, and the surprises only continued. Yelland & Papps is run by Michael and Susan who have been making wine since 2005. However their passion and skill for winemaking has found them quickly becoming the next big thing in the Barossa Valley (so visit them before they get too popular). Yelland & Papps is located just between Nuriootpa and Tanunda, and is a must visit for everyone who comes to the Barossa (not just those with kids).

Little People Friendly

What can I say…….. this is kid heaven and ticks all of my boxes. Susan and Michael’s kids were quick to show my kids the play equipment, and trampoline (perfect little hosts). We even spied some of the farm animals on our visit; the friendly cat, chickens in their pen, and saw some sheep in the next paddock over. There is also a lovely kids play kitchen/shop on the veranda. I even managed to taste the entire range with no whining from the children- bliss. This winery has officially become a must visit for our family.

The Food

This is a tasting room for wine so I would encourage you to book close by for lunch, and pop into Yelland & Papps before or after lunch. They do have a lovely cheese and cracker platter for $15, which you can enjoy in one of the lovely spots outside (I will be doing this next time for sure).

Oh and I almost forgot they sell a selection of food stuffs including lentils, which are perfect in this weather.

The Drinks

This is purely an adult tasting experience, but trust me the kids will be too busy playing to care (just have kids drinks and snacks in the car to avoid being caught out). The wine at Yelland & Papps is sensational, and starts from a very reasonable $22 a bottle. They do both red and white wines (although being the Barossa reds are in greater abundance).

I’ve avoided red wines for a few years, but guess who just turned to the dark side today. My favourite pick was the Second Take Grenache, but there is such a wonderful variety to suit every wine drinker. Y&P is also highly awarded and was named BEST SMALL CELLAR DOOR / BAROSSA VALLEY – GOURMET TRAVELLER MAGAZINE 2013. James Halliday rated Y & P 5 red stars and named it one of the “Ten Best New Wineries in Australia”.

This winery has officially ticked all the boxes for our little family. The kids had a blast, and I ended up with a box of wine. Yelland & Papps is a must visit for any family visiting the Barossa.

Also if you do have a small group of 4 adults then perhaps get in touch with Y & P and book the private tasting room (with toasty fire).
