Your Museum, Your Say! | South Australian Museum | 2017

Transforming the South Australian Museum

The South Australian Museum is one of the most visited museums in Australia, and has the finest collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural objects in the world.

However, many of the Museum’s displays have remained untouched for 40 years and its gallery spaces are too small. The South Australian Museum is proposing a major transformation that will allow it to display much bigger and better exhibitions.

In 1877 the original vision for the South Australian Museum was for it to be built up to the North Terrace footpath, but this was put on hold and a ‘temporary’ building was constructed away from the city street.

It’s time for the original vision for the South Australian Museum to be completed.

  • The South Australian Museum will double in size
  • Blockbuster exhibitions will come to the Museum
  • Current Museum galleries will be transformed and modernised
  • More of the Museum’s world-leading Australian Aboriginal cultures collection will go on display
  • The much loved Discovery Centre will be relocated to a large ground-floor area
  • More of the Museum’s world-leading collections will be placed on display, giving visitors greater access to amazing science and technology.

The South Australian Museum is seeking your feedback on its new vision. To have your say please complete this quick survey.
