Hendrie St Reserve Marion Inclusive Playground

Livvi’s Place Marion | Hendrie Street Reserve Inclusive Play Space

In a South Australian first, a new inclusive playground has been designed to cater for all ages and abilities and includes elements for a broad range of disabilities. The playground is situated at Hendrie Street Reserve in Park Holme (just behind the Marion Outdoor Swimming Centre). Consideration has been given to children who may have mobility issues, vision/hearing impairments and spectrum disorders such as Autism.

See our previous stories about the playground here and here.

We took a little look recently. Here are some progress sneak peek pics of the playground. It’s really coming along now.

Why is this Playground So Special?

This inclusive playspace, the first of its kind in SA, has been built as a collaboration by The Touched by Olivia Foundation, the City of Marion, the South Australian Government and the community.

A Livvi’s Place provides a unique environment for children of all ages and all abilities to play side by side.

In less than 10 years, Touched by Olivia has spread its wings and opened 19 Livvi’s Places across Australia. These playspaces are underpinned by the principles of universal design and reinforce the basic right that every child needs to play.

Livvi’s Place Marion will allow people of all abilities to play side by side in a safe and fun environment and has been specially designed in close consultation with the community to ensure no-one is left out.

Why? It’s simple – every child deserves the chance to play regardless of their abilities.

Hendrie St Reserve Playground

The playspace is situated in a great location with Hendrie Reserve being a beautiful tree-lined spot, with plenty of grassy area and the Marion Outdoor Pool adjacent.

The playground features:

  • a wheelchair accessible carousel
  • swings
  • a hill slide
  • a nature play creek
  • play tables
  • an accessible cubby house
  • water play areas
  • BBQs and picnic shelters
  • toilets with disabled access and baby change facilities
  • The site will be fenced and protected by shade sails.

This is an off-leash park where dogs can exercise off-leash, except within 5 metres of a playground, at a wetland or when organised sport is being played.

Dig and Delve is a giant shovel-shaped sculpture by Laura Wills and William Cheesman at the centre of the playground (pictured above).
