Lobethal Lights ARE NOT Cancelled!
It’s been reported that the Lobethal Lights are cancelled this year. Just to clarify – while the annual Festival events such as The Living Nativity, Pageant and the Market on Main Street will not go ahead this year, the community of Lobethal are still planning on putting up Christmas lights on their houses.
The Lights of Lobethal Committee is encouraging local residents and businesses to make the Christmas light displays bigger and better than ever. Everyone will just need to keep social distancing when viewing the lights.
Statement from the The Official Lights of Lobethal Facebook page (1 October 2020):
The Lights of Lobethal committee have currently been working hard and obtaining advise from many different sources in regards to how we can hold the 2020 festival. Unfortunately it is with heavy hearts the committee advises the community that we made the responsible decision to cancel this year’s event. The decision was not made lightly but due to the Covid 19 pandemic our priority is keeping the community as safe as possible. We wish everyone well during this time and look forward hopefully seeing you all at the 2021 event.
*To clarify, the official festival is cancelled but we encourage homes and businesses to light up bigger than ever. Actual events such as The Living Nativity, the pageant etc are unfortunately not able to be safely put on with covid 19 restrictions. We all love the lights and are thankful to each and every person who puts up displays.*
Lobethal -Bill & Peg’s Christmas Lane Lights Display commented:
I have been told that it is just the Main street and Festival that has been cancelled. Houses in Lobethal can still put up their lights for people to drive around and see. This is how the Lights of Lobethal started. Most people who I talk to are putting up their lights, so there will plenty to see, But no stalls etc. in the main street. Our community needs this for their families after the fire.
The Lights of Lobethal Christmas festival has been lighting up the Lobethal Valley in the Adelaide Hills for over sixty years. Created by the community of Lobethal, the true spirit of Christmas evolved into the largest Community Christmas Light Display in the Southern Hemisphere, so it’s incredibly disappointing the official festival events can not go ahead.
Families can still safely drive through the town to view the lights on homes, just as they do each year through dozens of Adelaide streets. If you find the footpaths are too crowded, there is actually no need to leave your car, but simply drive slowly along and enjoy the view from your vehicle. With so many Christmas events already cancelled in 2020 it’s important to support the ones that can still go ahead safely.
