Marion Cultural Centre Plaza has reopened after an extensive upgrade, with a community event planned for 26 October 2024.
The City of Marion council has redeveloped the Plaza to become the vibrant heart to their city and to provide the community with a space to get together and celebrate, relax and experience some of the best that the City of Marion has to offer
The Plaza is situated alongside Marion Cultural Centre (MCC) to the east, South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC), Centrelink and GP Plus to the west. Located to the south is Marion Westfield with pedestrian and vehicle connections along Warracowie Way and Milham Street. The area was upgraded to enhance activity, amenity and accessibility to and within the precinct.
The design principles considered in the concept plans included:
- Improve pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, amenity and safety through the subject area for linkages between the local residential areas, the Oaklands Station, MCC, SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) and Westfield and other facilities on Milham Street.
- Development of a plaza that can be utilised for community events and provide improved amenity for community use between the MCC and the SAALC with due consideration of events planning requirements.
- Retention of vehicle access to existing business and community facilities within Milham Street, whilst minimising traffic volumes.
The plaza features the Warracowie Wells – a series of three ground artworks crafted by the late Martin Corbin, using salvaged materials from the historic โWarracowieโ homestead – named to honour First Nations and rich history of the land. These Wells evoke the memory of three historic wells once used by local homes and farms previously situated on the site of Marion Cultural Centre.
As part of the MCC Plaza redevelopment, the artwork has been thoughtfully retained and relocated, preserving its original intent of contemplation and connection to the past and helping to provide the community with a deeper sense of place.
