Moana Beach, South Australia

Beautiful sandy beach, waves and a tourist park makes Moana the perfect family getaway.

Moana Beach, situated south of Adelaide between Seaford and Maslin Beach, is only around 45 minutes drive from the Adelaide CBD.  It’s a popular beachside town for families to visit during the holidays and close enough for a day trip.  Each summer our family heads to Moana and it has become one of our favourite local beaches – mainly for the waves which are perfect for young children to boogie board and body surf.

Moana is one of few beaches where cars are allowed to drive onto the beach.  It’s great to be able to set up shade alongside the car and it makes it so much easier to unpack and pack up.  It’s usually $6 per car to drive onto the sand (as at Jan 2014).  The ramp is located to the left of the Surf Life Saving Club as you head towards the beach, the turn off is before the carpark.

Once you find a spot to get settled it’s then time to enjoy the sand, sun and surf!  Kids always love building sand castles and the sand here is great for digging and construction because it’s so compacted.  It’s also perfect for ball sports such as beach cricket.  Bring along a frisbee, beach ball or even totem tennis.  Dogs too are allowed on the beach, but during daylight savings they must be on a lead between 10.00am and 8.00pm.  It’s handy to have the car on the beach to provide the dog some shade underneath.

The waves at Moana are perfect for kids who love to boogie board and body surf with the wash from the waves taking you right up onto the sand.  It’s great for little ones too who just want to have a splash in the shallows.  You can also learn to surf down here with Surf & Sun who host school groups and run both group and private lessons at various Adelaide beaches, including Moana.

Moana beach has a tourist caravan and camping park and there’s a small playground located near the carpark in front of the Surf Life Saving Club.  For a snack or a full meal the Deep Blue Café is a popular spot to stop in and eat or grab some takeaway.  Located on the corner opposite the SLSC, it’s just a short walk from the beach and they have excellent coffee, great hot chips, cold drinks and ice creams.  The café is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have children’s menu options for under 12’s.
