Moon Lantern Trail 2021 – Review
One of our favourite OzAsia Festival FREE family events, the Moon Lantern Parade, has been transformed into a 4 day celebration for the first time in 2021. What a beautiful opening night it was in Adelaide.
We had a bite to eat at the Lucky Dumpling Market at Elder Park first and then made our way to the footbridge to cross over to Tarntanya Wama/Pinky Flat.
The amazing 40 metre Hong Kong Dragon sits along the bridge to welcome you along the path to Pinky Flat.
This year returning favourite lantern included the flying pig, junk ship, school of fish, lion dance, lucky dog (aka Inu Hariko) and the two pandas.
The lanterns are spread out all over Pinky Flat and each of the large ones have a board with the name of the lantern and there are stories of Chinese mythology to be read along the way.
You can take as much time as you like exploring the lanterns at your own pace; there’s trees to play in and the water fountain to admire. Plus all the kids will probably want one of the cute lanterns of their own as a souvenir.
While it’s not the same atmosphere of the usual parade this format means you can get up close to all the beautiful lanterns and see them properly instead of having them flash past you. There also isn’t the stress of trying to get a good seat along the path as before. It’s also quieter so more suited to those who don’t like the loud music and noises of the parade.
What time to go?
If you don’t want to go too late, 7pm is a good time – it’s not too dark yet so you can familiarise yourself with the surroundings, but the lanterns are lit up and you get to enjoy the sunset. It gets dark about 7.30pm so you’ll get to see the lanterns properly then. If you can’t go at night, even during the day the lanterns would be fun to see.
- Once it gets dark you will need to keep an eye on the kids as even though it’s mostly fenced, the river is right there.
- The ground can be uneven with grass and paths so be careful when walking.
- It’s fine for strollers.
2021 Dates & Times:
Audiences can walk through and admire the lanterns along the trail from 5pm on the Thursday and Friday and from 12 noon on the Saturday and Sunday.
All four nights will feature lanterns lighting up at 7.30pm and giant puppets Rama and Sita roving through the trail from 8pm.
