National Science Week Free Events

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and thousands of individuals get involved, taking part in more than 1000 science events across the nation.

Science Week is designed for everyone – it’s definitely not restricted to schools and universities – with events and activities and talks and shows for every age group.

It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists’ to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in.

Highlighted below are a range of free family-friendly events being held throughout the week for all science lovers and curious minds:

Help Us Build Our Future City Kids Activity

Sunday 19 August | 11am – 3pm | Centre of Democracy, Adelaide, SA

When Colonel William Light designed the streets of Adelaide, it was an innovative and forward looking city plan. Visit the Centre of Democracy for a hands-on activity, and help imagine what our future city might be. Bookings not required. For information visit the National Science Week website.

Autism-friendly Family Morning

Saturday 18 August | 8am – 1oam | South Australian Museum, Adelaide

Designed specifically for children with autism and their families, we’ll host a unique morning experience. Before we open to the public, you’ll have a chance to explore all the galleries and the Discovery Centre. Information on booking will be available from 25 July.

Science @ Urrbrae

Thursday 16 & Friday 17 August | 9.30am – 2.30pm | Urrbrae Agricultural High School, Netherby

Urrbrae High School is hosting a series of interactive science workshops, inviting primary groups to attend and experience the wonderful aspects of Science at Urrbrae including the Wetland (sustainability and nature), Farm (paddock to plate) and Science Labs (experiments). Stem Skill Logic Games – Come and Try

Saturday 11 – Sunday 19 August | 9am – 5pm | Refreshing Memories Educational Toys, Blair Athol

Try your hand at some of the best STEM skill teaching games around. Select from our large range of Thinkfun games and spend some time challenging yourself in logic, spatial awareness and programming sequencing logic. Intro to Robotics with Edison

Tuesday 14 August | 10am – 11.30am | Cove Civic Centre, 1 Ragamuffin Drive, Hallett Cove

Interested in robots? Get hands on with the Edison robots. Learn basic coding skills with block-based programming and take on the robot dance battle challenge!

Fungi of the Adelaide Hills

Sunday 19 August | 12pm | Rocky Creek Hut car park, Kuitpo, Sidler Road, Meadows,

Join the Adelaide Hills Science Hub, Inspiring SA, Fungimap and Natural Resources SA near Kuitpo Forest on a family friendly foray into the fabulous field of fungi! Catering specifically to the 1-5 years age group, this fantastic fungi event will get you and your kids closer to nature.
