Natural Habitat – Mermaids of Rymill Park | Adelaide Fringe 2022 – Review

★★★★ 4 stars for unique family fun

Got a mermaid-obsessed kiddo in your life? They’ll love visiting this interactive installation at the 2022 Adelaide Fringe.

Natural Habitat – Mermaids of Rymill Park is a unique event being staged at outdoor venue hub Gluttony.

Performers are set up around Rymill Park Lake in elaborate, ocean-inspired costumes. And kids (and adults) can ask them all sorts of nosy questions – including how mermaids go to the toilet!

You can also probe them on topics to help with a scavenger hunt, which is part of the fun.

The installation is such an interesting concept as no experience is the same. It all spills from how you interact with the ‘sea life’, who do well to stay in character throughout.

My two loved meeting everyone from an office-loving water-nymph, with a retro phone for a headband, to a sassy siren in a rowboat, who asked if they wanted an assistant job that would include massaging her tail. (She also told them to beware of ‘Pirate George’.)

A few of the performers spoke about ocean pollution and said my twins could be ‘honourary mermaids’ if they promised to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. A nice touch.

It takes about 20-30 minutes to wander through the installation, depending on how inquisitive (or shy) your littlies are. You can choose to stay for a moment or a while.

As the show’s promo material says: “Prepare to leave your storybook at home because these mermaids are determined to break some stereotypes and make some waves.”

For us, it was a nice start to our Gluttony outing before enjoying some food and then catching a magic show.
