Our beautiful South Australian parks provide countless opportunities for children and families to connect with nature and to experience the health and wellbeing benefits of playing, learning and being physically active through bushwalking, camping, picnicking, fishing, swimming, cycling, surfing and exploring.
Nature Play SA’s Park of the Month will showcase a different park each month and encourage children and families to experience a range of landscapes, flora and fauna while taking part in fun nature based activities.
Calling all Storm Boys and Storm Girls!
May 2015 Park of the Month is Coorong National Park!
Stretching more than 130km, the Coorong National Park is one of the most spectacular coastal landscapes in Australia. Experience the beauty of the sweeping sand dunes of the Younghusband Peninsula which protect a string of saltwater lagoons sheltered from the Southern Ocean.
The Coorong is a wetland of international significance. It is an important breeding area for the Australian pelican and a refuge for ducks, swans, cormorants, terns, grebes and numerous migratory birds.
The Coorong is of enormous cultural significance to the Ngarrindjeri people, with ancient mounds of discarded shells revealing evidence of campsites over thousands of years.
Storm Boy a heartwarming film about a young boy’s friendship with a pelican (based on the novel by Colin Thiele), was filmed here!
The park provides fantastic opportunities for bird watching, fishing, boating, camping and sightseeing. You can explore the park on foot via walking trails, paddle along waterways by kayak or canoe, or 4WD along designated tracks and the beach.
