Nilpena Ediacara National Park
It may have been 550 million years in the making, but South Australia’s newest national park was officially opened by Minister for Environment and Water Dr Susan Close in April 2023.
Nilpena Ediacara National Park is home to one of the world’s most significant fossil sites due to the unique state of preservation of the early record of animal life. Nilpena’s significance is integral to the bid for World Heritage for the Flinders Ranges and in April 2021, the Flinders Ranges was placed on Australia’s World Heritage Tentative List.
Located 500km north of Adelaide, the park highlights include a world-class audio visual experience featuring a complete fossil bed that comes to life with the latest leading-edge 3D animation technology. The visitor precinct includes three historic pastoral buildings – the former blacksmith shop, shearer’s quarters and woolshed.
To preserve the integrity of the region, access to the park is via pre-booked guided tours only. There is a high level of interest in this park and they advise booking your tour well in advance of travel.
Mild temperatures from April to October make this period an ideal time to visit and the most comfortable in the Flinders Ranges region.
Location:
Nilpena Road, Nilpena, South Australia
