Paddington 2 | Review
If you enjoyed Paddington or if you are looking for a movie that’s great for kids as well as entertaining for adults then you can’t go past Paddington 2.
Paddington 2 starts with bear cub Paddington floating down a raging river while two bears sit on a bridge watching him. They endeavour to rescue him by grabbing him as he floats past. The rescue scene is a bit tense, but thankfully for small people, short-lived. The two bears adopt him and become his Aunty Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo. The scene then moves to Paddington happily settled at ‘home’ with the Browns in London, having obviously befriended everyone in the street.
The movie has a really strong story-line which revolves around Paddington getting a job and working hard to buy his Aunty Lucy a specially made, one-of-a-kind pop-up book of London as a gift for her 100th birthday. Paddington is wrongly-framed for it’s theft and the story turns into a mystery as the Brown family work to find out who stole the book and free Paddington from gaol.
The movie has lots of themes about community, what it means to be a family and to support and encourage others. There are some absolutely heart-warming scenes, particularly when Paddington transforms the Gaol’s kitchen and dining room into a gorgeous tea house with the help of his new ”friends”.
Hugh Grant does a great job hamming it up in his role as a washed-up, self-obsessed actor who does dog commercials for a living. Make sure you watch the closing credits to see Hugh Grant in fine musical form!
Paddington is such an endearing character who is always finding the best in others, which makes this movie really positive even though there are a couple of scenes which are quite moving. Towards the end of the film, Paddington is trapped underwater and Mrs Brown is unable to rescue him. This could be an emotional moment for some kids (and parents!), however he is rescued very quickly. There is nothing in the movie that small ears shouldn’t hear – the worst of it is Hugh Grant referring to his “bot bot cheeks”.
There is a strong element of slapstick humour throughout the film and lots of special appearances from actors like Joanna Lumley and Noah Taylor. Older kids will even recognise some of the actors from Horrible Histories.
This is a really great movie for everyone as kids will also be able to appreciate nearly all the humour in the film. The movie is fun, really engaging and funny to watch the whole way through and Miss 10 and Mister 8 both agreed it was a fantastic movie.
Paddington 2 opens in cinemas on Thursday 21 December 2017
