Royal Adelaide Show 2019

As always there’s plenty to get excited about at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show. Taking in two full weekends and running for ten days in total, this year’s Show promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The 2019 Royal Adelaide Show, opening Friday 30 August and closing on Sunday 8 September, will showcase the very best of South Australia. Experience the animals, rides, food, entertainment and more at South Australia’s longest-running and best-loved event! Competitions are a big part of the Show and they keep going from strength to strength. Make sure you check out some of the winning entries on display (we love to see all the cake decorating) or soak up the excitement of the judging ring when you’re at the Show.

Old favourites like the exhibition pavilions, great food, carnival attractions, showbags and the nightly fireworks will return, and there’s an amazing array of free things to do at this year’s Show – many of which are covered in the Show Magazine.

Sensory Information

The Show would love everyone to enjoy South Australia’s largest event, however with so much to see and do, as well as large crowds, this may not be possible for everyone, particularly those Show-goers that have additional needs, or have a cognitive disability such as Autism Spectrum Disorder.  They hope the below information assists you in planning your day, and making the Royal Adelaide Show a great experience for all who attend.

Quiet Zone  |  Location: Between Farm Expo and The Learning Centre (C10)

Times:  11am to 6pm daily

Show-goers in need of some quiet time and relief from sensory stimulation can access the new Quiet Zone located between Farm Expo and The Learning Centre (C10). This space is designed as a retreat for families and individuals that may have special needs, with support staff from Autism SA on-hand to assist.

Quieter Days

Whilst everyone is welcome every day of the Show, if you prefer less people, the quieter days of the Show are likely to be:

  • Monday 2 September 2019
  • Tuesday 3 September 2019
  • Wednesday 4 September 2019
  • Thursday 5 September 2019

Quieter Areas

Traditionally the Southern End of the Showground, particularly the Livestock areas tend to be quieter than the carnival and entertainment precincts.

If you would like to watch the Main Arena Entertainment, the grass hill on the southern end generally has less people compared to the grandstands. The NightShift program does feature a large amount of noise and excitement which may not be suitable for all Show-goers. The daytime program, consisting primarily of the Horses-In-Action competition is generally more peaceful and there is often ample seating in the grandstand available. Please refer to the entertainment timetable for performance times.

The Show fireworks

See the RAA Fireworks each night to close out the Main Arena:

  • Fridays and Saturdays @ 9pm
  • Monday – Thursday & Sundays @ 8pm

Each night of the Royal Adelaide Show will close with a bang.  For the first time ever they will be presenting an exciting 7 minute Pyromusical Firework and HSGF Flame System display incorporating 45 firing positions creating a large circular firing area for a spectacular view from any angle.  Other new fireworks include white glitter comets with red star mines, white strobing dahlia with twilight glitter tail and white strobing mines.

Play & Go tips for enjoying the Royal Adelaide Show

  • If your child is at school, check which day they have off for ‘Show Day’ so you can plan ahead and perhaps take the same day off work.
  • Take a photo of each child before you get to the show – if the worst case scenario happens and they become lost, you’ll have an exact image of what they are wearing to show authorities.
  • Use the free safety wrist bands provided at the entrance – just write your mobile number on the band and put it on your child’s wrist.
  • Also if you have a skateboard for your stroller it’s worth using it for an older child who may still find it tiring to walk to and from the car and all over the showgrounds. Plus it’s handy to take a stroller just to carry all your stuff.
  • Enter via the gates on Goodwood Road in front of the pedestrian crossing if you want to avoid walking through the carnival and show rides at the start with the kids. This way you can check out everything in the pavilions, see the animals, watch some stage performances, and do other free activities, before the kids are dazzled by the rides.
  • The $2.50 cheese toasties are one of the cheaper options and easy for kids to eat.
  • Make a day of it and get your money’s worth by seeing some of the free shows – we love the precision driving cars and motorbike tricks, and always watch them just before the fireworks. It’s a great way to rest your legs after walking around all day.
